Blue Light Filter on Windows? You Already Have One

You have been reading at night and the screen feels harsh, so you went looking for a blue light filter to install. Before you download anything, Windows has one built in and it costs nothing.

It is called Night light. It has been there since Windows 10. Most people have never opened the page it lives on.

I want to show you where it is, and what Microsoft actually claims for it. Then the two things it will not do. That second half is the part nobody writes down.

Where it is, and it is two clicks

On Windows 11: Start, Settings, System, Display. Turn on Night light.

On Windows 10 the same thing sits at Settings, System, Display, Night light settings.

There is a faster route. Select the Network or Speakers icon on the right of the taskbar. Scroll the panel down to Night light and toggle it there. Learn that one, because you will use it daily.

Documented by Microsoft on its display brightness and color page: "To help you get to sleep, turn on the night light and your display will show warmer colors at night that are easier on your eyes."

What it actually does to the picture

It shifts the whole display toward amber. The more you push it, the further from white it goes.

Microsoft on the control: "Move the Strength slider to adjust the intensity of the blue light reduction."

Ours, and marked as ours: start around a third and leave it for an evening. People set it to the maximum on the first night, decide it looks absurd, and turn the whole feature off.

At full strength the screen goes properly orange. That is not a fault, it is the slider doing what it says.

⚠️ Anything you are judging color on should be done with this off. Photo editing, choosing paint, checking a print proof. The screen is deliberately lying to you while it is on.

Setting it to look after itself

The feature is far more useful on a schedule than on a switch.

Microsoft's own wording: "Turn on Schedule night light. Then, either select Sunset to sunrise, or select Set hours and enter custom times for the night light to turn on and off."

Sunset to sunrise is the one to pick. It uses your location, so it moves through the year on its own and you never think about it again.

Set hours suits anybody on shifts. It also suits a desktop with location switched off, where sunset to sunrise has nothing to work from.

When the toggle is gray, and the line Microsoft buries

One sentence explains most of the grayed-out cases, and almost nothing on the internet quotes it.

Microsoft: "Night light isn't available if your device uses certain drivers, like DisplayLink or Basic Display."

That covers two very common setups. A laptop plugged into a docking station often runs its screens through DisplayLink.

And Basic Display is what Windows falls back to when no proper graphics driver is installed. Those machines have no Night light either.

So check Device Manager, Display adapters, before you touch anything else. If it says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, install the real graphics driver and the toggle comes back.

⚠️ And if you use a dock, test with the laptop unplugged from it. If Night light works undocked and not docked, that is DisplayLink and it is a limitation rather than a fault.

The case where it is gray for one account only

Now a genuinely awkward one, and I am printing it because it has no confirmed answer.

An owner wrote it up in May 2025. The toggle went gray suddenly on one Windows 11 Home account, while other accounts on the same PC were fine.

They had already tried a great deal.

In their own list: PowerShell commands, Windows API calls, the Connected Devices Platform Service and TokenBroker, registry keys under the CloudStore and BlueLightReduction paths, clearing the CloudExperienceHost cache, `sfc /scannow` and `DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth`.

Their summary: "Nothing worked."

An adviser suggested the manufacturer's display driver, then resetting the user profile through `sysdm.cpl`, then a clean boot. The owner pushed back on the profile reset, reasonably: "Deleting a user profile sounds like a last chance solution."

The adviser's closing line was honest: "But otherwise I don't think you have other option."

The thread ends there with no confirmed fix.

Ours, and marked as ours: the useful part is a test the owner had already done without realizing. If it works on a second account on the same machine, it is not the driver.

Most write-ups send you to the driver first. That one observation rules it out in a minute.

Ours: make a second local account, sign in, and check. If Night light works there, the fault is inside your profile and no driver reinstall will touch it.

What Night light will not do

Being clear about the limits, because expectations here run ahead of the feature.

It is not a brightness control. A screen that is too bright at night is still too bright with Night light on. Brightness is a separate slider on the same page.

It does not touch what the display physically emits at the panel level. It changes the colors Windows sends. A hardware low-blue-light mode in the monitor's own menu is a different thing, and the two can be used together.

And it makes no medical claim. Microsoft says warmer colors are easier on your eyes and are meant to help you get to sleep. It does not promise you will sleep better, and I am not going to promise it either.

If your eyes are tired rather than dazzled, text size and contrast are doing more than color temperature is. On Windows 11 both sit in Settings, Accessibility. On Windows 10 the same page is Ease of Access.

Do you need an app, or glasses, on top of this

The money question, so let me answer it plainly.

For the job most people want, a warmer screen after dark on a schedule, Night light does it. It is free and already installed.

A third-party app buys you finer control, not a different result. Per-monitor settings, custom color temperatures, a gradual fade. Worth it if you want those, pointless if you do not.

⚠️ The one case where an app genuinely wins is the DisplayLink dock above. Windows will not offer Night light there at all. Then something else is the only route.

And on a work machine, check before you install anything. A display utility that sits between Windows and the graphics driver is exactly the kind of thing an IT policy blocks.

If your screen is doing something stranger than being too blue, ghosting and trailing have their own causes. The usual fix for those can make it worse.

Status: tested and written 23 August 2026 on Windows 11 and 10. Microsoft documents the Windows 11 and Windows 10 routes, the quick settings toggle, the Strength slider, the Sunset to sunrise and Set hours scheduling, and the exclusion for DisplayLink and Basic Display drivers. The grayed-out-for-one-account case is a May 2025 Microsoft Q&A thread, quoted, and it has no confirmed fix.

How do I turn on the blue light filter in Windows 11?

Go to Settings, System, Display, and turn on Night light. Faster still, click the Network or Speakers icon on the taskbar, scroll the panel down, and toggle Night light there. On Windows 10 the page is Settings, System, Display, Night light settings.

Why is Night light grayed out?
