Remove a Background? Windows Already Does It, Free

You have a photo and you want the background gone, and every result on the first page wants an upload or a subscription. Before you hand a picture to a website, look at what is already installed.

Windows does this in two different apps, offline, for nothing. Neither one sends your picture anywhere.

Both are worth knowing, and they are not equally good. I will say plainly which suits what.

Paint does it in one click

The one most people already have open, and the fastest of the two.

Open the image in Paint, then press Remove background on the toolbar.

Documented by Microsoft on its Paint page: the tool "uses AI to help you isolate a subject and remove the background with just one click."

⭐ One click is the whole interaction. There is no selecting and no lasso. No tracing an outline with a mouse you are fighting.

⚠️ Microsoft says it is "Included in the latest version of Windows 11". So an older machine may not have the button, and the section below covers that.

The Photos app does the same thing with a steering wheel

Slower and better. It is the one to reach for when Paint gets it wrong.

Open the picture in Photos, choose Edit, then the Background panel.

In Microsoft's words on its photo editing page, the background "will be automatically selected", and you can turn on the Background brush for more control.

⭐ You get three actions rather than one. Microsoft names them: "Select the Remove option", "Select the Blur option", and "Select the Replace option" with a color palette behind it.

⚡ And you can correct the machine's guess. Microsoft documents Add mask "to add more areas as part of the background" and Remove mask to take parts back out.

⭐ Ours, and marked as ours: blur is the underrated one. For a photo you are sending to somebody, blurring the room behind you looks natural where a cut-out looks obviously cut out.

Nothing you do here leaves the machine

The part that actually matters, and it is the reason to use these at all.

Microsoft states it in one sentence: "AI is used to separate the background, but the separation process is done locally on your device. This means that your data never leaves your device."

⛔ An online background remover cannot say that. The picture goes to their server by definition, because that is where the processing happens.

⭐ Ours: for a holiday snap that hardly matters. For a photo of a document, a child, an ID card or anything from work, it matters a great deal.

⚡ It also means no account and no signal. These work on a train. They also work when the site you were about to use is down.

Save it as a PNG, or you throw the transparency away

The step people skip, and then they blame the tool.

⛔ A JPG cannot hold a transparent background. Save the cut-out as a JPG and Windows fills the empty part with white, silently.

⭐ Ours, and marked as ours: use Save as, then PNG, every time. It is one extra click and it is the difference between a cut-out and a picture of a cut-out on a white square.

⚠️ Check the file size afterwards. PNG files are bigger, and a folder of them adds up faster than you expect. If your drive is filling, that is worth knowing about.

Which one to open

Being useful rather than diplomatic, because they are genuinely not equal.

⭐ Paint, for a clean subject on a plain background. A product. A logo. Somebody standing against a wall. One click and you are done in ten seconds.

⭐ Photos, when the edges are hard. Hair, plants, railings, anything fiddly. The mask brushes are the only way to fix what the automatic selection got wrong.

⚡ Photos again if you want blur rather than removal, because Paint does not offer it.

Where one click stops working

Worth saying, because every tool that does this has the same limits.

⚠️ Hair and fur are the hard case. Both apps will take a bite out of the outline, and no setting prevents it. The mask brush in Photos is the repair.

⚠️ Glass, smoke and anything see-through confuse the selection, because the machine has to decide whether you can see through it or not.

⛔ Low contrast is the real killer. A gray coat against a gray wall gives the selection nothing to work with, and both apps guess badly.

⭐ Ours: if the automatic result is close, fix it. If it is nowhere near, take the photo again against a plainer background. That is faster than fighting it.

If the button is not there at all

Practical, because this is the commonest reason the instructions above do not match your screen.

⭐ Both apps update through the Microsoft Store, not through Windows Update. Open the Store, go to Library, and press Get updates.

⚡ Paint's background removal arrived with a Windows 11 update. On Windows 10 the button does not exist, and no Store update adds it.

⚠️ If Windows itself is behind, that is a different job and it has its own order. Do that first, then come back.

What this actually replaces

Being honest about the scale of it, because the answer is more than it sounds.

⭐ The free tier of most online removers gives you a small image. The full resolution is the paid part. Paint and Photos hand you the original size with no tier at all.

⚡ And there is no watermark, which is the other thing free tiers do.

⭐ Ours: I stopped opening those sites entirely. Not because they are bad. Two clicks in an app already on the machine beats a page load, an upload and a wait.

Status: gone over 24 August 2026, Windows 11. Microsoft's Paint page is quoted for the one-click Remove background tool and for Paint being included in the latest version of Windows 11. Microsoft states that Photos separates the background locally and that your data never leaves the device. Remove, Blur, Replace, the Background brush, Add mask and Remove mask are its wording. How do I remove a background from a picture in Windows for free?

Open the image in Paint and press Remove background on the toolbar. That is one click. For a harder subject, open it in Photos instead, choose Edit, then the Background panel, and use Remove with the mask brushes to correct the selection.

Does Windows background removal upload my photo?

No. Microsoft states that AI separates the background locally on your device, and that your data never leaves the device. That is the practical difference between these and a website, which has to receive the picture before it can work on it.

Why is my cut-out background white instead of transparent?

Because you saved it as a JPG, which cannot store transparency. Use Save as and pick PNG. Windows fills the empty area with white on a JPG and does not warn you first.

Why is there no Remove background button in my Paint?

The feature arrived with a Windows 11 update, so Windows 10 does not have it. On Windows 11, update Paint from the Microsoft Store under Library and Get updates, then reopen the app.

Then save as PNG, not JPG. That single choice is why most people think the feature did not work.
