You pressed F1 inside a folder and Windows handed you a search engine, which is not help by anybody's definition. That is where this exact phrase comes from.
The things people press F1 about are a short list, and one of them changed recently in a way nothing warned you about. It is not a fault you caused.
So I have put them in the order they actually come up, starting with that one.
⚠️ If F1 keeps doing this to you across Windows generally, that accident has its own page and a way to stop it.
The preview pane went blank, and Microsoft did that on purpose
The one worth the whole article, because it looks exactly like a fault.
Documented by Microsoft on its preview pane notice: "Starting with Windows security updates released on and after October 14, 2025", preview is "disabled by default for files marked with Mark of the Web".
The message Microsoft says you will see: "The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents."
⛔ Mark of the Web means the file came from outside. Downloaded, emailed, or opened from a share. Your own documents are untouched. That is why this hits some folders and not others.
Microsoft gives the reason: NTLM hash leakage "might occur if users preview files containing HTML tags" that reference external paths.
The fix Microsoft publishes, and it takes one right-click
The part that gets buried under worse advice, so it goes first.
Right-click the file, choose Properties, then tick Unblock.
⚠️ Microsoft adds a caveat worth reading: "The change might not take effect immediately but will be effective after the next login."
⭐ Ours, and marked as ours: do it on the folder you actually work in, not on everything. Mark of the Web is doing a real job on files you have not looked at yet.
What owners did instead, and why I am not recommending it
Honest, because this is what the threads are full of and you will find it anyway.
An owner opened the thread on 15 October 2025, the day it landed: "Windows update just broke this. The error message I get is 'The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer.'"
A second owner replied on 21 October and it worked: "I uninstalled the recent update KB5066835 and the preview pane now works."
A third confirmed a different route on 23 October: "This solution worked for me, run a powershell script to batch unblock all your files."
⛔ Removing a security update to get a preview pane back is a bad trade. It puts back the exact hole the update closed, and the next cumulative update reinstalls it anyway.
⭐ The Unblock route reaches the same place without turning the protection off. That is why it is the one above.
Turn on file name extensions, because half the confusion starts there
Thirty seconds. It changes how much of this you ever have to ask about.
Microsoft's route: "View > Show, then select File name extensions".
⭐ Without it, two files called invoice look identical. One is a PDF. The other is a shortcut to something else, and Windows tells you neither.
⚡ It is also how you spot the ones pretending. Extensions on, and a file called photo.jpg.exe gives itself away. With them off it is invisible.
⚠️ Hidden items sit on the same menu, under View, Show, Hidden items. Turn that one on only when you need it.
Searching a folder without waiting all afternoon
The complaint behind a lot of these searches, and it has a real answer.
Microsoft describes the default: typing in the search box searches "from the folder you're in and any child folders."
⭐ Then narrow it with Search options on the toolbar. Microsoft names what you can set: "date modified, kind (like document, picture, or video), size, system, or zipped files."
⚡ Kind is the one to learn. A picture you cannot name is hopeless to search for. Tell Windows it is a picture.
⚠️ If search comes back empty when you know the file is there, the index is a separate problem with its own fixes.
Opening a file with something other than what Windows chose
Judging by what people search alongside this phrase, this is the real question underneath.
Right-click the file, choose Open with, and pick the app. That is a one-time choice. It changes nothing permanently.
⭐ To make it stick, use Choose another app and tick the box about always using it. Ours: only do that when you are sure. It applies to every file of that type.
⚡ A PDF that keeps opening in a browser is this setting, not a fault. So is a video that opens in the wrong player.
Getting the folders you actually use to the top
Small, and it saves more time than anything else on this page.
Microsoft's instruction: "right-click (or press and hold) the folder and select Pin to Quick access."
⭐ Pin the four or five you open every week. Not twenty. A pinned list you have to read is the same as no pinned list.
⚡ Windows key and E opens File Explorer from anywhere, which Microsoft documents as one of the three ways in. It is faster than finding the taskbar icon.
When File Explorer itself stops responding
Worth knowing, because the symptom looks like Windows dying and it usually is not.
⭐ Restarting Windows Explorer takes ten seconds and does not touch anything you have open elsewhere. Task Manager, find it, restart.
⚠️ That same restart fixes a surprising number of unrelated things, including a clipboard that has stopped taking anything.
⚡ Ours: if it hangs on one specific folder rather than everywhere, the problem is a file in that folder, not File Explorer. Usually a video. Or an image it is trying to make a thumbnail of.
Status: read start to finish 24 August 2026, on both Windows 11 and 10. Microsoft states the preview change applies to security updates released on and after 14 October 2025, names Mark of the Web as the condition, publishes the exact warning wording and the NTLM reason, and gives Properties then Unblock as the fix with its next-login caveat. The View and Show routes and Pin to Quick access are its wording too.
