Phone Camera Not Working? Start With What Touches It

You open the camera and get a black square, or the shutter does nothing at all. Apple's own list starts somewhere most people would never think of.

Not with settings and not with a restart. With whatever is physically stuck to your phone.

I worked through Apple's steps in their published order, and the order itself turned out to be the useful part.

Apple starts with the case

The first step, quoted, because it sounds too simple to matter.

Documented by Apple on its camera page: "Remove any case, film, or accessory (such as a polarizer, extender, or magnifier) that might block the camera or flash or that places a magnet near the camera."

⛔ Read the last five words again. A magnet near the camera is enough, and magnetic cases and mounts are everywhere now.

⭐ Modern phones have moving parts in the camera. Stabilisation relies on tiny magnets, and a stronger one nearby confuses it.

⚡ Apple repeats the point for blur: "If you see motion blur in low-light situations and you use a lens converter, metallic case, or a magnetic lens mount, try removing the accessory."

Then two tests that take a minute

Apple's own, and they split the problem cleanly.

For the flash: open Control Centre and use the flashlight. If the flashlight works, the LED is fine and the camera app is the suspect.

For the lenses: "If the photo is blurry, clean the front and back camera lenses with a microfiber cloth."

⭐ And check both of your cameras. Apple's step is: "To switch cameras, tap the rotate button." One working and one not is a very different fault from both dead.

⚠️ A dirty lens is more common than a broken one, especially on a phone that lives in your pocket.

The cause Apple's page leaves out

The gap, and it explains most black previews in other apps.

⚠️ We could not find app permissions mentioned anywhere on that page. It covers cases, cleaning, restarting and updating, and never mentions the camera permission list.

⛔ An app denied camera access shows a black rectangle, not an error. That is the single commonest reason a camera works in the Camera app and nowhere else.

⭐ Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera lists every app and its switch. Check the one failing on your phone.

⚡ The Camera app itself is the control. If it works there and nowhere else, this is permissions rather than hardware, every time.

Then the two Apple does give

Short, because they are obvious once you get here.

⭐ Restart the phone. Apple lists it, and it clears a camera process that has hung.

⚡ Update iOS. Also on Apple's list, and camera bugs do get fixed in point releases.

⚠️ A force restart is the heavier version when the phone is not responding at all. That has its own exact sequence and getting it wrong wastes the attempt.

What this page cannot tell you

⛔ There is no iPhone here to test any of this on. Apple's steps are quoted straight from the page, and every judgement around them is mine.

⭐ What is solid is the order. I kept Apple's own, because it is more useful than any single step in it.

When it is worth stopping

Apple's own boundary, and it is sensible.

⛔ Apple's line is plain: "If the camera or flash still isn't working properly, you might need service."

⚠️ Visible dirt or debris inside the lens, or a lens that looks misaligned, is a repair rather than a setting.

⭐ A phone that has been wet needs the water dealt with first. Liquid detected has its own list and drying it properly matters.

The three that are not faults at all

Worth ruling out before anyone books a repair.

⭐ A green or purple spot in bright light is lens flare, not damage. Every phone camera does it.

⚡ A shaky picture while recording video is stabilisation working against a magnetic accessory, which is Apple's own point above.

⚠️ And a camera that is slow to open on an older phone is usually storage rather than the camera. There is nowhere to put the photo.

Status: checked against Apple's published camera guidance, 25 August 2026. That page gives the case, film and accessory step including the magnet warning, the flashlight test, the lens cleaning advice, the rotate button check, restarting, updating iOS and the service boundary. App permissions could not be found on that page. ⛔ No handset was tested for it.

Why is my phone camera showing a black screen?

In your Camera app itself, usually something physical: a case, a film or a magnetic accessory. In another app, almost always that the app has been denied camera permission, which shows as a black rectangle rather than an error.

Can a phone case really stop the camera working?

Yes, and Apple says so directly. It names cases, films and accessories including anything that puts a magnet near your camera. Magnetic mounts and metallic cases interfere with the stabilisation, which uses magnets itself.

How do I know if it is the camera or the app?

Open the Camera app that came with the phone. If it works there and not elsewhere, the hardware is fine and the failing app has been denied permission in Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera.

Why are my photos blurry all of a sudden?

Apple's own step is to clean both of your lenses with a microfibre cloth, which fixes it more often than people expect. If it is motion blur in low light, Apple points at lens converters, metallic cases and magnetic mounts.
