Phone Screen Not Responding to Touch? Try This Order

Your phone is on, the screen is lit, and nothing you tap does anything. That combination has a specific first move.

A frozen phone and a broken screen look identical from the outside for about thirty seconds. One test separates them, and it costs nothing.

I checked Apple's exact wording first, because the button sequence has to be right and a near miss wastes the attempt.

The force restart, in Apple's own sequence

The first move, and the order matters.

Documented by Apple on its unresponsive iPhone page: "Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo (this might take longer than 10 seconds)."

Quickly release really does mean quickly. The two volume presses are taps rather than holds, and that is where most attempts go wrong.

Then keep holding it down, because Apple says it "might take longer than 10 seconds", and people let go at eight.

It does not delete anything at all. A force restart is the equivalent of pulling the plug, and it touches no data.

If nothing happens at all

Apple's next steps, with the times it gives.

In Apple's words, if it does not turn on: "charge your iPhone for one hour and then try again."

And if a low battery icon appears: "charge your iPhone for 30 minutes or until it starts."

A completely flat phone will not respond to a force restart at all, because it has nothing to restart with.

⚠️ Use a wall charger rather than a computer or a car port, because those supply less and an hour may not be enough.

Telling frozen from broken

The test, and it takes fifteen seconds.

After the force restart, watch whether the Apple logo appears. A logo means your phone is alive and the screen is drawing.

If the logo appears and touch still does nothing, the screen is receiving but not sensing. That is a digitiser problem rather than a software one.

Test one area at a time. A screen that responds at the top and not the bottom is damaged rather than frozen.

⚠️ We could not find that distinction on Apple's page. It covers the restart and the charging steps and does not address a screen that responds to nothing after a successful restart.

The five that cause it and are not damage

Worth ruling out before you spend any money.

A screen protector that was fitted badly. Trapped air or a thick edge stops touch registering along one strip.

Wet or greasy hands, or a wet screen. Capacitive screens read the moisture on your fingers as touches happening everywhere at once.

Extreme cold, which people rarely suspect. Phones become unresponsive below freezing and recover in the warm.

⚠️ A cheap or damaged charging cable while plugged in. Poor cables inject electrical noise that makes a screen jump and stutter, so unplug it and test.

And a single app freezing on its own. If your phone responds everywhere except in one app, the phone is fine.

What this page cannot tell you

Up here where you will see it, rather than at the foot of the page.

No phone was measured for this article. I have no handset on this desk, so the button sequence and the charging times are Apple's and the rest is mine, marked as ours.

I quoted the sequence rather than describing it, because getting it slightly wrong is the commonest reason the attempt fails.

When it is worth stopping

The boundary, and it is worth respecting.

⚠️ A screen with any crack, however small, that stops sensing is a repair, and nothing on this page reaches it.

A phone that has been wet needs the water dealt with before any of this. Liquid detected has its own list and drying it properly matters.

⚠️ And a phone that will not turn on at all rather than not responding is a different starting point. Apple asks for a full hour there.

A screen flickering rather than ignoring you is its own fault again. That one splits software from panel quickly.

Status: read against Apple's unresponsive iPhone documentation, 25 August 2026. Apple supplies the force restart button sequence, the note that it may take longer than 10 seconds, the one hour charging step and the 30 minute low battery step. We could not find a screen unresponsive to touch after a successful restart addressed on that page. ⛔ No phone was measured.

How do I force restart an iPhone that is not responding?

Press and quickly release volume up on your phone, press and quickly release volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple notes it might take longer than 10 seconds, which is where most attempts fail.

Does a force restart delete anything?

No, because it is the equivalent of pulling the plug on your phone. Nothing is erased and no settings change, which is why it is safe to try first.

My phone shows the Apple logo but still will not respond to touch. What now?

Then the screen is drawing but not sensing, which points at the touch layer rather than the software. Test different areas of the screen, because responding at the top and not the bottom means damage rather than a freeze.

Can a screen protector stop touch working?

Yes, and it is more common than people expect. Trapped air or a thick edge stops touch registering along one strip of your screen. Lift a corner and test before assuming anything worse.

Why does my screen go mad while it is charging?

Usually a cheap or damaged cable. Poor cables inject electrical noise that your touchscreen reads as phantom presses. Unplug it and test, then swap the cable.

The Short Version

  • Volume up tap, volume down tap, then hold the side button. Apple's exact order.
  • Hold past ten seconds. Letting go early is why most attempts fail.
  • A force restart deletes nothing of yours at all.
  • If nothing happens, Apple says charge for one hour and try again.
  • Logo appears but touch still dead means your screen senses nothing. That is hardware.
  • A badly fitted screen protector stops touch along one strip of your screen.
  • Wet hands, a wet screen or extreme cold all cause this temporarily.
  • A bad charging cable makes a screen jump. Unplug and test.

Where to Next

Do the force restart properly first, with two quick taps and a long hold past ten seconds. Most of these end there.

If nothing at all happens, put it on a wall charger for a full hour before trying again.

If the logo appears and touch is still dead, test different parts of the screen. Where it responds tells you whether it is damage.

If the screen responds and the camera does not, that is a different list. Apple starts with the case rather than a setting.

Anyone whose unresponsive screen turned out to be the screen protector, say which type in the comments. Some are far worse than others.
