How Much Can I Sell My PC For? Get a Real Estimate

A PC's resale value needs its exact specifications, condition and a current offer or comparable sale. Start by recording the model and hardware, then compare a trade-in appraisal with completed sales for a similar computer.

The original purchase price cannot supply today's selling price. Buyers and trade-in programs assess the computer being offered now.

Keep cash offers, store credit and private-sale prices separate. A larger number is not automatically the better return once restrictions, selling fees and shipping enter the calculation.

Identify the computer that is actually being valued

Write down the manufacturer, exact model, processor, RAM, storage capacity and graphics hardware. Our PC specification lookup shows which Windows tools report those details.

Record faults as carefully as specifications: a cracked display, weak battery, damaged port or missing charger can change eligibility and price. For a desktop built from parts, list the main components rather than inventing a branded model.

PC valuation comparison: cash trade-in pays money, restricted trade-in credit must be spent with its provider, and a private sale needs fees and shipping deducted

Status: Microsoft and Dell US trade-in terms, plus eBay's pricing procedure, reviewed 24 October 2026. No computer was appraised, listed or sold; no dollar estimate is invented here.

Dell says its valuation considers the device's age, model, component health and physical condition. That explains why two computers sold under the same family name can receive different offers.

Get a cash appraisal for an eligible laptop

Microsoft documents a personal device trade-in procedure. In the US, follow Get trade-in value to its partner, select the device type, brand and model, then answer the condition questions.

Complete the questions and choose Calculate Value to see the appraisal. Check the current eligibility rules before accepting.

Microsoft's published criteria include a working device, a battery that holds charge and no cracked display or liquid damage. A fault can therefore affect whether this route accepts the laptop at all.

This is a route for eligible listed devices, including laptops. It does not establish a price for every custom desktop or component. A model absent from that program needs a different valuation route.

Read the approval and inspection conditions before committing to shipment. An online appraisal is based on the answers supplied; the receiving partner still checks the device.

Compare store credit without counting it as cash

For Dell's US program, open tradein.dell.com and check the device's eligibility and estimated credit. Eligible non-Dell products can also qualify. Its trade-in FAQ explains the process.

Dell says the resulting credit is for purchases on Dell.com. Compare it with a cash offer only after deciding whether a Dell purchase is something you already intend to make.

An upgraded graphics card or extra RAM may matter greatly to a private buyer without improving a particular trade-in quote. Dell warns that an upgrade may be excluded from its credit assessment.

That is a reason to compare routes, rather than remove parts before shipping. Follow the selected program's complete-device requirements if accepting its offer.

Use completed sales to estimate a private selling price

eBay's pricing instructions give a concrete research route: open Advanced Search, enter the identifying keywords, choose Completed listings and run the search.

Read whether a result actually sold before using it as a comparison. An ended listing without a buyer does not establish a successful sale at its asking price.

Match the processor, graphics card, memory, storage and condition as closely as possible. Separate complete computers from parts-only listings. A damaged unit offered for repair is a poor comparison for a functioning laptop.

Use several close matches to build a price range. Subtract the selling costs that apply to your account and delivery choice. A displayed sale amount is different from the money a seller keeps.

Choose a route before preparing the handover

Choose the offer by its usable return and its conditions. A private listing needs a buyer; a trade-in needs program approval. Neither is a guaranteed payout merely because a calculator or another seller shows a number.

Before any handover, copy the files you need and follow the Windows preparation steps for selling. Keep the original evidence of specifications and condition with the accepted quote.

If an inspection changes the amount, contact that program's support with the quote and the stated reason.

An unsupported model or rejected trade-in can still need another buyer or a suitable recycling service. A rejection does not establish the computer's price elsewhere.

The Short Version

Record the exact PC and its condition, request an eligible appraisal, and compare similar completed sales. Treat restricted credit separately from cash. Decide using the expected return after costs and the conditions attached to the offer.

Where to Next

Use the same hardware description for each comparison. Changing the model or ignoring a fault can make a higher estimate meaningless when the device is inspected.
