You plugged a monitor into your laptop and Windows behaved as though nothing happened. The screen sits there on its no signal message while your desktop stays stubbornly on one display.
Before you go looking for a cable, one thing is worth knowing. On many of these the monitor was detected all along, and Windows was told to ignore it.
I have put that first because it takes two keystrokes, and in my reading it is the answer more often than the cable is.
The rest works down from free and instant to opening Device Manager.
1. Press Windows key and P, and choose Extend
The two-keystroke one. It is the first thing Microsoft names too.
Hold the Windows key and press P. A panel appears on the right with four choices.
Documented by Microsoft on its external monitor page: "press the Windows logo key + P to make sure that the Extend option is selected."
The four are PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second screen only. PC screen only is the setting that produces exactly your symptom.
⭐ A Windows update can change this without telling you. Owners reported through late 2025 that after an update their display mode had been reset to showing on one screen only, with everything else untouched.
So if this started overnight, with no cable moved, try this before anything else.
2. Check the monitor's own input source
Not a Windows setting at all. It catches people with more than one cable.
Use the buttons on the monitor itself and find its input menu. Set it to the socket you actually used. HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort or USB-C.
A monitor set to HDMI 2 with your cable in HDMI 1 shows no signal and looks exactly like a detection failure.
Ours, and marked as ours: if the monitor has an auto-detect option, turn it off and pick the input by hand. Auto-detect gives up quickly on a machine that is still booting.
3. Unplug everything else
Blunt, and Microsoft puts it high on its own list.
Its instruction: "Disconnect all accessories from your PC. Connected docks, dongles, adapters and other hardware can cause conflicts."
Docks are the worst offender. A dock passes video through a chain of chips, and one that works for a keyboard can still fail to carry a display.
⭐ Test by plugging the monitor straight into the laptop, with the dock out of the picture entirely. If it works that way, you have found your fault and it is not Windows.
4. Ask Windows to look again
The button exists. It is just not obvious.
Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings. Scroll to Multiple displays and select Detect.
That forces a fresh scan rather than waiting for Windows to notice by itself.
⚠️ If Detect finds it and then loses it again minutes later, that is a different fault. Intermittent means cable, connector or power, and it is worth trying a different cable before any driver step.
5. Reset the graphics driver without restarting
The strangest shortcut in Windows. It is also documented.
Microsoft's own line: "pressing Windows logo Key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset your graphics driver may fix your issue."
Your screen goes black for a second and beeps. Nothing you have open closes.
⭐ This restarts the display stack from scratch, which is why it can pick up a monitor you plugged in while the machine was asleep. It costs you a second and I would try it twice.
6. If this began right after an update
Now check your dates rather than your hardware.
Open Settings, Windows Update, Update history. Look at what installed on the day it stopped working.
Reported by owners through late 2025 on Microsoft's board: a preview update was named as having reset display settings back to showing on one screen only, and several people found their setup restored by simply choosing Extend again.
If a setting change does not do it, Uninstall updates from that same history screen puts the machine back.
⚠️ Removing an update is a temporary answer. It will be offered again, so use the time to find the driver that copes with it.
7. Clear out monitors Windows still remembers
For the case where you have used several screens with this machine over the years.
Open Device Manager, choose View, then Show hidden devices. Expand Monitors.
You will probably see entries in gray. Those are displays Windows remembers and is not talking to.
Reported by advisers on the late-2025 threads: uninstall the gray entries under Monitors, restart, and let Windows detect the current screen from scratch.
⛔ Uninstall only the grayed-out ones. The active entry is the display you are reading this on.
8. Roll back or reinstall the display driver
Last, because it is the heaviest of the eight and the least likely.
Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. Right-click your graphics adapter.
Microsoft documents both routes here: Roll Back Driver if this started after a driver changed, or Uninstall device followed by a restart so Windows fits a fresh copy.
If Roll Back is grayed out there is no previous version stored, and uninstalling is your only option.
Ours, and marked as ours: for graphics specifically, take the driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel rather than from your laptop brand. They ship far more often, and that is the one exception to the usual driver advice.
When the laptop simply cannot drive two screens
Worth ruling in or out before you spend another evening. No setting fixes this one.
Some machines drive only one external display at a time. Some USB-C ports carry power and data but no video at all.
Microsoft says so plainly for that case: where the display adapter cannot support multiple monitors, you need a docking station or a USB adapter to add video output ports.
⭐ The tell is a USB-C port that charges perfectly and does nothing for a screen. Not every USB-C socket carries DisplayPort, and the symbol beside the port is what tells you which yours is.
Your model number will answer it in a minute, and msinfo32 gives you that in one line.
What did not work for people
Printed because several of these threads never reached an answer at all.
Updating the graphics driver. Multiple owners on the late-2025 threads had already done it before posting, and their second screen stayed missing.
Swapping cables. Also already tried, repeatedly, and the fault turned out to be a display mode setting rather than the cable.
Waiting for the next update. Some of those threads close with the reporter still stuck, which is why the setting checks above are worth doing carefully rather than quickly.
Status: last verified 23 August 2026 on Windows 11 and 10. Microsoft documents Windows key plus P and Extend, the accessory disconnect, the Windows Ctrl Shift B graphics reset, and the Device Manager roll back and uninstall routes. The update that reset display modes in late 2025, and the hidden-monitor cleanup, come from owner and adviser reports and are marked as such.
Why is my second monitor not detected in Windows 11?
