What Is a GPU? And Does Yours Need to Be Better?

You are looking at two laptops and one of them says it has a graphics card. Or a game will not run and something mentioned your GPU. Or somebody told you that integrated graphics are not good enough, without saying what for.

Being told to spend more without being told why is irritating, so let me give you the actual dividing line.

The question underneath all of those is the same. Is the one you have good enough for what you actually do, or should you spend more?

That question has a real answer, and it depends on four things you already know about yourself.

What a GPU is, in one paragraph

Your processor is a generalist. It does anything, one thing at a time, very fast.

A graphics processor is a specialist. It does one narrow kind of arithmetic, thousands of times at once. That happens to be exactly what drawing a screen full of pixels needs, which is why it exists.

Every computer has one. The question is never whether you have a GPU. It is whether yours is built into the processor or sitting beside it as a separate part.

The two kinds, and what actually differs

Documented by Microsoft on its GPU page: an integrated GPU is "built into a Windows device's motherboard", and these "normally aren't as powerful as discrete GPUs but are more power-efficient".

They are also, in Microsoft's words, "normally less expensive than discrete GPUs" and they "allow laptops to be thinner, more lightweight, and more power-efficient".

Documented by Intel on the difference that matters most: integrated graphics "doesn't use a separate memory bank for graphics/video. Instead, the GPU uses system memory that is shared with the CPU", while discrete graphics "has its own dedicated memory that is not shared with the CPU".

That shared memory is the real limit, not the chip. Integrated graphics borrows from the same pool your programs are using.

On a machine with 8 GB of RAM, giving some of it to graphics leaves less for everything else, and both slow down together.

Sorted by what you actually do

Web, email, documents, video calls, streaming. Integrated is fine and has been for years. Microsoft's own summary of integrated GPUs is that they are "great for some gaming, light video editing, or working with photos".

Photos, and video you shoot on a phone. Integrated is fine. Modern ones have hardware for decoding and encoding video, which is the part that used to be painful.

Older or lighter games. Integrated will run them. Not at high settings, and not at high frame rates, but it runs them.

Modern games at good settings. Here you need a discrete card, and that is the real dividing line. Microsoft's words: discrete GPUs are "best for heavy processing tasks like intense photo and video editing, design work, and gaming".

Serious video editing, 3D, or anything with AI in the name. Discrete, and the amount of memory on it starts to matter more than the speed.

Ours, and marked as ours: most people asking this question fall into the first three groups and are being sold the fifth.

If your honest answer is web, documents and the occasional photo, you do not need a graphics card and the money is better spent on memory or a faster drive.

Why a laptop has both, and why that confuses people

Many laptops carry an integrated GPU and a discrete one.

Documented by Microsoft: "The integrated GPU is used for lighter graphic tasks, while the discrete GPU is used for heavier graphic tasks. Switching between GPUs based on the task being performed allows a balance between performance and power efficiency."

⚠️ The switching is automatic and it does not always choose correctly. A game that Windows does not recognize as demanding can end up on the integrated chip, which is a very common reason for a laptop performing far below what it should.

Ours, and marked as ours: you can set this per program. In Settings, System, Display, Graphics, add the program and choose High performance. If a game runs badly on a laptop that should handle it, check this before anything else.

How to see which one you have

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc for Task Manager, open the Performance tab, and look down the left side.

One GPU entry means integrated only. Two means you have both, and the second one is your discrete card.

Click each. The name tells you what it is, and the memory figure tells you whether it has its own.

What the numbers on a graphics card mean

Because the naming is deliberately confusing.

The memory figure, 8 GB or 12 GB, is how much the card holds for textures and frames. More matters at higher resolutions and in newer games. It does not make an old card fast.

If your drive rather than your graphics is the bottleneck, SSD or HDD covers the upgrade that usually matters more.

The model number is the thing that actually indicates speed, and only within one maker's own generation. A higher number from three years ago can be slower than a lower number from this year.

⚠️ Ignore any single number in isolation. The only honest way to compare two specific cards is to look up how each performs in the things you actually run.

Does an old machine get faster with a new card?

Sometimes, and less often than people hope.

If your machine is slow at everything, the graphics card is almost certainly not the reason. the two things that usually slow a PC measures the two things that usually are.

If it is fast at everything except games, and the games are what you care about, then a card is the right answer, and on a desktop it is a straightforward upgrade.

On a laptop it is almost never possible. Laptop graphics are soldered to the board. Whatever came with the machine is what it has for life.

Do I need a graphics card?

Only if you play modern games at good settings, edit video seriously, or do 3D and design work. Microsoft describes integrated graphics as "great for some gaming, light video editing, or working with photos", which covers what most people actually do.

What is the difference between integrated and dedicated graphics?

Integrated is built into the processor and shares your system memory. Dedicated is a separate part with memory of its own. Intel's own description is that integrated "uses system memory that is shared with the CPU" while discrete "has its own dedicated memory".

Can I add a graphics card to my laptop?

Almost never. Laptop graphics are soldered to the board, so whatever the machine shipped with is permanent. External enclosures exist for laptops with the right port, and they cost more than most people expect.

Why is my game using the wrong GPU?

Windows switches between GPUs automatically and does not always choose correctly. Set it by hand in Settings, System, Display, Graphics: add the game and choose High performance. That is a common reason a capable laptop performs badly.
