SSD or HDD? The Only Question That Matters Is Yours

You are looking at two laptops at about the same price. One lists a 512 GB SSD, the other lists a 1 TB hard drive, and the bigger number is on the slower machine.

Or your own PC is crawling and somebody has told you to fit a solid state drive.

Either way you are being asked to choose between speed and space without being told how much of either you need. I would rather make that decision easy for you than list specifications at you.

Most pages will list the differences. The differences are easy. The decision is what you came for.

So this page sorts by what you are actually trying to do.

The difference, in one paragraph, then we move on

A hard drive stores data on spinning metal platters with a head that moves across them, like a record player. To read something it must physically move to where that thing is.

A solid state drive has no moving parts. Everything is equally close, so where your data sits does not matter.

Documented by Microsoft on its storage types page: "SSDs are smaller and faster than hard disk drives (HDDs)", they "are noiseless and allow PCs to be thinner and more lightweight", and "HDDs are more common in older devices".

That physical difference is the whole story. Everything else follows from moving parts against no moving parts.

"My PC is slow, should I fit an SSD?"

This is the commonest reason people ask, and the answer is usually yes, emphatically.

A mechanical drive is the single biggest cause of a slow modern PC. Not the processor, not the memory. Windows constantly reads small files scattered across the drive, and a spinning drive has to physically move for every one.

Ours, and marked as ours: an eight year old laptop with an SSD fitted feels newer than a two year old laptop with a hard drive. It is the most cost-effective upgrade in computing and nothing else is close.

Before you buy anything, check what you have. the two numbers worth measuring first shows you where to look, and it takes about ten seconds.

"I am buying a laptop, which should I get?"

Get the SSD. This is not close in 2026.

Almost every laptop worth buying now ships with one. If you are looking at a cheap one that specifies a large hard drive instead, that is a machine built to hit a price, and the drive is where they saved the money.

⚠️ Watch for the trick specification: a small SSD paired with a large hard drive, sold as though you get both. You do, but Windows goes on the small one and it fills up.

"I need a lot of space cheaply"

Here the hard drive still wins, and it is the one case where it clearly does.

Per pound, a mechanical drive holds far more. For a big library of photos, video, backups or recordings that you do not need instantly, that is exactly the right tool.

The good answer is usually both. An SSD inside the machine for Windows and your programs, and a large mechanical drive for the archive, either inside a desktop or in an external case.

Ours, and marked as ours: you get the speed where it is felt and the capacity where it is not. Nobody notices a slow drive holding photos from 2014.

"Which lasts longer?"

More complicated than either side claims.

A hard drive fails mechanically. Moving parts wear, and a drop while it is running can kill it instantly. It often warns you first, with noise or slowdowns.

An SSD wears by writing. Each cell can be written a finite number of times. In normal use that limit is far beyond the life of the machine, so most people will never reach it.

⚠️ The difference that matters is in how they fail. A dying hard drive usually degrades, which gives you time to copy things off. An SSD is more likely to be fine and then not fine.

Neither is a backup. Both fail. If something exists in one place only, it is not safe, whatever it is stored on.

"Is an SSD worth it for gaming?"

For load times, yes and noticeably. For frame rate, no.

Your drive holds the game and loads it. Once it is running, the drive is barely involved and your graphics card and processor decide how it plays.

⚠️ One newer wrinkle. Windows has a feature called DirectStorage that lets games load data straight to the graphics card, and it requires an NVMe SSD specifically.

Games using it are still a minority, and it is worth knowing if you are choosing a drive today.

If games stutter rather than load slowly, the drive is not your problem and games stuttering with good FPS covers what is.

The word NVMe, and whether you should care

You will see SSDs described as SATA or NVMe, and the price differs.

SATA uses the same connection a hard drive uses. Much faster than a hard drive, limited by that older connection.

NVMe plugs straight into the motherboard and is several times faster again.

Ours, and marked as ours: the jump from hard drive to any SSD is enormous and you feel it everywhere. The jump from SATA to NVMe is real and you feel it in far fewer places.

If you are upgrading an older machine, do not spend extra chasing NVMe. If you are buying new, it is probably NVMe anyway.

So, the short answer

Buying a machine: SSD, and do not think about it further.

Upgrading a slow one: SSD, and it will surprise you.

Storing a lot of things you rarely open: a hard drive, as a second drive rather than the main one.

Choosing between a bigger hard drive and a smaller SSD at the same price: take the SSD, and put the archive somewhere else.
