iPhone 17 came out on September 19, 2025, in its first markets, including the U.S. Apple announced it September 9; preorders began September 12. The announcement and first sale are different dates.
September 19 was the first retail release
Apple says the initial availability date was Friday, September 19, 2025, in its iPhone 17 announcement. That is the date to use for the original release, rather than the keynote or preorder date.
The same announcement lists the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, India and other countries in the first group. It gives September 26, 2025, for another group of markets. A local sale date can therefore be later without either date being wrong.

Status: iPhone 17 launch schedule checked against Apple's September 2025 announcement on 24 October 2026. Regional availability is distinguished from the first release.
These are historical launch dates. A delivery estimate on a current order concerns that order's stock and shipping, so it does not change when the model originally arrived.
For the next generation, separate the confirmed Pro release from the regular model before applying a date to the whole family.
iPhone 17 and iOS 17 are different dates
The number on the phone is a hardware model. The number beside iOS Version describes its software. Apple states that iPhone 17 launched with iOS 26; the names do not have to match.
For the model in hand, open Settings > General > About and read Model Name. Apple's model-number instructions explain how to reveal the A-number by tapping the value beside Model Number.
A problem described as starting with iOS 17 can concern an older handset. For example, the autocorrect explanation dates that software change separately from the iPhone 17 hardware launch.
Use the purchase date when checking an individual phone
The launch date tells you how old the model is, not when a particular phone was made, bought or first used. Check the receipt or seller's records when that distinction matters.
Apple documents iPhone 17 as a 2025 model in its identification list. Match the full model name before comparing it with another listing; a family name alone can leave out the variant.
For an existing handset, iPhone 17 battery-health readings address battery condition separately. A calendar date cannot tell how heavily that battery has been used.
If a seller's model name, receipt and description disagree, ask for clarification before paying. Apple Support can help identify the hardware, but a launch date cannot prove when that phone was bought.
The Short Version
Use September 19, 2025, for iPhone 17's first release. September 9 was the announcement and September 12 began preorders. Later regional availability, an individual purchase and the installed iOS version answer separate questions.
