September 20, 2024, was when the iPhone 16 came out in its first markets. Apple announced it September 9 and opened preorders September 13. The 16e followed in February 2025, so check the full model name.
Match the release date to the full model name
Apple documents the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus launch in its September 2024 announcement. Both went on sale on September 20, 2024, after the September 13 preorder opening.
For the Plus handset, the display and body measurements distinguish its diagonal from the height used for physical fit.
The iPhone 16 Pro announcement gives that same first sale date for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The Pro models did not wait until the following year.

Status: iPhone 16, Plus, Pro, Pro Max and 16e dates checked with Apple's launch releases on 24 October 2026. Dates refer to initial retail availability.
The 16e followed on February 28, 2025
Apple says iPhone 16e was announced on February 19, 2025, with preorders from February 21 and availability from February 28. Its separate release explains the different year.
A seller describing an iPhone 16-family phone as a 2025 release could therefore mean a 16e. Ask for the exact model instead of assuming that the ordinary iPhone 16 launched then.
The same naming check matters for the released 18 Pro models and the unannounced regular version.
For Apple's folding phone, check the confirmed Duo dates instead of applying the standard model's release schedule.
On an unlocked phone, check Settings > General > About > Model Name. Apple states the introduction year for each variant in its iPhone identification reference, which also lists regional model numbers.
Why a country or receipt can show another date
September 20 was the first-wave date for countries including the United States. Apple's ordinary iPhone 16 release also gives September 27, 2024, for Macao, Vietnam and a further group of countries and regions.
The date on a receipt is the purchase date of that particular phone. A 2024-generation handset could have been bought new later, so the receipt and the model's release year need not match.
Nor does the release year measure its battery wear. The Battery Health menu guide explains the readings available on newer iPhones when checking an existing device.
For a used phone, check condition separately
Apple's preowned iPhone checklist covers physical condition, battery health, Activation Lock and testing the cameras. Use those checks to judge a unit; the launch date only identifies its generation.
A camera that switches to a blank preview needs its own assessment. The front-camera troubleshooting page covers that symptom rather than using the phone's age as a diagnosis.
If a listing omits the variant or condition, request those details before purchase. For identification, compare the A-number with Apple Support's list instead of relying on the listing's year.
The Short Version
The original iPhone 16, Plus, Pro and Pro Max first went on sale September 20, 2024. The 16e's first sale was February 28, 2025. Confirm the full model, then keep regional availability, purchase date and condition separate.
