The percentage next to your clock tells you how full the battery is. It has never once told you how worn it is.
Those are different questions. Only one of them explains why a laptop that used to last all morning now wants a charger by eleven.
I ran the report on this laptop expecting a dull result. It came back saying the battery holds 62 percent of what it shipped with, and Windows had never mentioned that to me.
The two numbers, and why only one is on screen
The whole thing, in three lines.
⭐ Charge is how full the battery is right now. That is the percentage on your taskbar, and it resets every time you plug in.
⛔ Health is how much the battery can still hold at all. Windows does not show it anywhere in Settings, and it never changes back.
⚡ A battery at 100 percent charge and 60 percent health is full and worn at the same time. Both readings are true. Only the second one explains the short afternoons.
The one command, and where the file lands
Two minutes, and it reads only.
Documented by Microsoft in its powercfg command-line reference: "Generates a report of battery usage characteristics over the lifetime of the system. Running powercfg /batteryreport generates an HTML report file in the current path."
⚡ Open Terminal or Command Prompt and run this:
powercfg /batteryreport /output "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\battery.html"
⭐ The file lands on your Desktop and opens in your browser. Nothing is changed and nothing is installed, and you can delete it afterwards.
⚠️ Microsoft also documents a duration switch, which limits the report to a set number of days. Leave it off the first time, because the whole history is the interesting part.
Ours: what this laptop actually reported
A measurement, taken here, with the numbers as they came out.
Ours, and it was worse than I expected. The report gave a design capacity of 55,997 mWh and a full charge capacity of 35,032 mWh.
⚡ That is 62.6 percent. The battery has lost more than a third of what it left the factory holding. No screen in Windows says so.
⭐ The report also puts that in minutes, which lands harder. It estimated 1 hour 4 minutes of active use at full charge, against 1 hour 43 minutes at design capacity. Your own report prints that same pair.
⚠️ Ours, and marked as ours: that gap of about 39 minutes is the real cost of the wear. It is not a slow app, a bad update or a setting.
The number Windows would not give me
The gap in the report, and it is a real one.
⛔ We could not get a cycle count out of it. The field exists in the report and on this machine it printed a dash, so the count is simply not being supplied.
⚠️ That matters because cycles are how battery wear is usually rated. Without it you can see the damage but not how much use caused it.
⭐ Do not treat a blank cycle count as a fault. It depends on what your battery firmware reports. Plenty of laptops never fill it in.
The reading wobbles, so never judge on one
This is the part almost nobody mentions, and it saves you a wasted purchase.
Ours, read straight off the history table in the same report. Across five consecutive weeks in 2025 the full charge capacity read 40,305 then 41,361 then 40,591 then 40,701 then 40,732 mWh.
⚡ It went up twice. A battery does not heal. Those rises are measurement noise, not recovery.
⭐ Judge the trend, not the reading. On this machine the same table shows 48,050 mWh in January 2024 and 40,732 mWh by May 2025, and that slope is real.
⛔ So take the report twice, a month apart, before you spend anything. One reading on a bad day has talked people into batteries they did not need.
One section of the report may be empty, and that is normal
Know this before you decide it is broken.
⚠️ Ours: 118 of the 121 daily rows in the battery life estimates section came back blank here, because this laptop spends its life on mains and rarely discharges.
⭐ Windows can only estimate runtime from time you actually spend on battery. No discharges means no estimates. You get a page of dashes.
⚡ If yours is full of dashes too, use the capacity numbers instead. Those are recorded whether you unplug or not.
Microsoft's own advice for the battery you still have
Quoted, because the internet is full of folklore on this one.
Microsoft states on its battery care page that you should "keep the battery within a moderate charge range (roughly 20% to 80%) whenever possible".
Documented by Microsoft on the same page: "Excessive heat can cause lithium-ion batteries to deteriorate more quickly, permanently reducing their capacity."
⭐ And if your laptop offers smart charging, Microsoft says to turn it on. That stops a machine left plugged in all day from sitting at 100 percent while it does it.
⛔ Storing a laptop for months at full charge is the one to avoid. Microsoft's advice for storage is to keep the battery at around 40 to 60 percent.
What a worn battery does and does not cause
Three things worth separating before you blame it.
⚡ Short runtime is the battery. That is what wear means. The report gives you the size of it.
⚡ A battery that will not take a charge at all is a different fault. That one starts with the number it stopped at, not with a health reading.
⚠️ Shutting down suddenly at 30 percent is the battery too. A worn cell cannot hold voltage under load, even when the meter says there is room.
⭐ A laptop that is slow while plugged in is not the battery. That is a different list entirely, and swapping the battery will not touch it.
Status: read against Microsoft's powercfg and battery care pages, 26 August 2026, on Windows 11. The report was generated here and every figure is what it returned. ⛔ Cycle count came back empty.
How do I check laptop battery health in Windows?
Run the battery report command in Terminal or Command Prompt. Windows writes an HTML file that you open in your browser. Find design capacity and full charge capacity near the top, then divide the second by the first. That percentage is your battery health, and nothing in Settings will show it to you.
What is a bad battery health percentage?
Below about 80 percent you will notice shorter runtime. Below about 60 percent you are getting roughly half the time you paid for. The laptop measured here came back at 62.6 percent. If your own figure worries you, take the report again a month later before you buy anything, because a single reading moves around.
Why is my cycle count blank?
Because your battery firmware is not reporting it. The field is in the report either way, and on the machine tested here it printed a dash. It is not a fault, and there is nothing you can do about it, so use the capacity numbers instead and ignore that line.
Does keeping my laptop plugged in ruin the battery?
Sitting at 100 percent all day is not ideal, and Microsoft's own guidance is to keep your battery roughly between 20 and 80 percent where you can. If your laptop has a smart charging or charge limit setting, turning it on does that for you without you having to remember.
