Every item on Dell's list is somebody's accident. Do not force a battery out. If it is stuck because of swelling, "do not try to free it as puncturing, bending, or crushing a battery can be dangerous."
Dell's wording covers tools too: "Do not use tools of any type to pry on or against the battery."
And the general rule for whatever you are holding: "Do not crush, drop, mutilate, or penetrate the battery with foreign objects."
Do not bend it or press on it, and do not put a swollen one back in your laptop. Dell says not to "reassemble a damaged or swollen battery into a notebook PC."
Replacements, and the sentence worth reading twice
The cheap one online is the risk here. Dell's warning is direct: "Using a non-Dell or incompatible battery may increase the risk of fire or explosion."
The point generalizes. A battery is a sealed chemical device with protection circuitry, and a bargain one saved money somewhere.
Disposal is not the household bin. Dell wants an approved container or an approved recycling center, and most electrical retailers take batteries back. It costs nothing, and it is the correct end for one of these.
The everyday version of all this
Ours, for the battery that is behaving perfectly well. Heat is the enemy the manuals keep naming, and a laptop working hard on a duvet is the everyday version of that.
Charge cycles count. A laptop that lives on mains power is not being kind to itself either, and it ages a different way.
