You can stream anything you like, but sending one video takes an hour and your camera freezes on every call. It is not in your head and it is usually not a fault.
Before you ring the provider, there are two numbers worth reading, and one of them explains most of it.
I read the Wi-Fi connection on this machine and the interesting part was not the speed. It was the single word printed next to it.
Two different complaints inside one question
Separate these first, because they have different answers.
⛔ Download fine, upload slow, everywhere in the house. That is your connection or your plan, and it is usually deliberate.
⚡ Upload slow only on this PC, fine on a phone. That is this machine or its Wi-Fi, and it is fixable.
⭐ Upload slow only on Wi-Fi, fine on a cable. That is the radio, and this page spends most of its time there.
Ours: the number this machine reports, and the word beside it
A measurement, and the second half is the one that matters.
Ours, read off the wireless adapter here. The link reports 86.5 Mbps, and next to it Windows prints full duplex: False.
⚡ Half duplex means one direction at a time. Your upload and your download are not two lanes. They are one lane taking turns.
⭐ So on Wi-Fi, uploading competes with everything being downloaded in the house. Including the stream in the other room.
⚠️ Read yours the same way. In Terminal:
Get-NetAdapter | Select-Object Name, LinkSpeed, FullDuplex, Status
⛔ A wired adapter will say True. A wireless one says False, and that is normal rather than broken.
The link rate is not your speed
This is the number people quote at each other and it does not mean what they think.
Documented by NETGEAR on its link rate and transfer speed page: "A link rate of 300 Mbps usually corresponds to 50 to 90 Mbps speed on the TCP/UDP layer."
⛔ That is a third of the advertised number, at best. The rest goes on overhead and on resending data that did not arrive.
⚡ NETGEAR says why it moves around: "The link rate is directly related to WiFi signal strength."
⭐ And it falls as you walk away: "As the WiFi client moves further away, its signal strength is reduced, and the link rate goes down."
⚠️ Ours, applied to the reading above. An 86.5 Mbps link on this machine will not deliver 86.5 Mbps of anything, in either direction.
Why upload is the smaller half to begin with
The part that is nobody's fault.
⚠️ Ours, and marked as ours: most home broadband is sold asymmetric. The download figure on your bill is large and the upload figure is a fraction of it.
⭐ Fibre is often the exception, with the two figures matching. Cable and older lines are usually nowhere near.
⛔ We could not find a manufacturer or regulator page we could verify stating that split outright, so the point above is ours rather than quoted.
⚡ Check your own bill or your provider's account page. I had to hunt for mine, and it was there in much smaller type.
Where you actually notice it
Four places, and they are the ones people complain about.
⭐ Video calls. Your camera is upload. Everyone else's is download, which is why you can see them perfectly while they see a slideshow of you.
⚡ Cloud backup and photo sync. All upload, running quietly, and often the thing eating what little you have.
⚠️ Sending large files or attachments. The classic one, and the reason people start searching.
⛔ Game streaming or hosting. Upload again, and the least forgiving of the four.
What is worth trying, shortest first
None of these costs anything.
⭐ Move closer to the router, or use the 5 GHz network. Signal strength sets the link rate, and I would try that before changing a single setting.
⚡ Pause the backup before an important call. One setting, and it frees the whole upload path.
⚠️ Try a cable once, just as a test. If upload is fine on Ethernet, you have proved it is the radio and not the line.
⛔ Then run a speed test and read only the upload number. Compare it with what you are paying for, not with your download.
⭐ And if downloads are slow too, this is not your page. That one has a completely different list.
When it is not the Wi-Fi at all
Three worth ruling out before you call anyone.
⚡ One app slow, everything else fine. That is the app or its server, not your line.
⚠️ Slow at the same time every evening. That is contention on the provider's network and no setting on your PC touches it.
⭐ Weak signal in one room only. That is a placement problem with its own fixes.

Why is my upload speed so much slower than my download?
Usually because that is what you are paying for. Most home broadband is sold with a large download figure and a much smaller upload one, and fibre is the common exception. On Wi-Fi there is a second reason on top: the radio is half duplex, so your upload shares one lane with everything being downloaded.
What does full duplex False mean on my Wi-Fi adapter?
It means one direction at a time. A wired connection sends and receives simultaneously and reports True. Wireless cannot, so it reports False, and that is normal rather than a fault. It is also why a busy house slows your upload more than you would expect.
Is my 86 Mbps link rate my actual speed?
No, and it is not close. NETGEAR documents that a 300 Mbps link rate usually delivers 50 to 90 Mbps in practice, because of overhead and resent data. Treat your link rate as a ceiling you will never reach, not as a speed you have.
Will a better router fix my slow upload?
Only if your Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. Test it with a cable first. If upload is just as slow on Ethernet, the router is innocent and the limit is your plan or your line, and no equipment you buy will change it.

Run the one-line command and look at the two values it prints. The speed is interesting, but the duplex word is the one that explains your evenings.
Then pause your cloud backup and try the same upload again. That single change fixes more slow calls than any router purchase.
Test once on a cable if you can. Five minutes, and you will know whether to blame the radio or the plan.
If downloads are slow as well, you are on the wrong page and I would rather point you at the right one. The download version has its own causes.
