You wash your hands, and your new Apple Watch no longer counts down the 20 seconds. You search Settings for Handwashing, and it is simply not there.
That is annoying if you used it every day, but your watch is not broken. I checked Apple's watchOS 27 guide and read the MacRumors thread in which new owners went looking for it.
The feature is missing, not hidden
Owners hunted for it in their first week. One who moved from a Series 10 to an Ultra 4 spent a long time on it: "have been searching this app for 20 minutes now."
One owner with a new Ultra 4 wrote: "I just got my new Ultra 4 and don't see it either." The same gap on the Series 12 is reported by owners too.
9to5Mac checked and found the feature alive in watchOS 27 itself: "Handwashing detection is still a feature in watchOS 27." It is only the new watches that lack it.
Status: watchOS 27, checked 29 September 2026. Apple's list of Handwashing models ends at the Series 11 and Ultra 3. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 have no Handwashing switch at all.
1. Check Apple's list of supported models
Apple's guide opens with a condition: on supported models, it says, "Apple Watch can detect when you start washing your hands and encourage you to keep going for 20 seconds".
The supported models list for watchOS 27 names six watches, and neither new model is among them:
- Apple Watch SE 3.
- Apple Watch Series 9, 10 and 11.
- Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3.
On one of those, the switch still works, and Apple's Handwashing page says to "Tap Handwashing, then turn on Handwashing Timer."
2. Make a 20 second timer and pin it
The Timers app is the closest stand-in. Apple's steps for a custom timer end with: "Tap hours, minutes, or seconds, then turn the Digital Crown to adjust."
Set it to 20 seconds and start it. Apple says you can also pin favorite timers, so pin this one and it is always easy to find.
After that, a timer "you've recently used" is one tap away, in Apple's words. It will not start by itself when the water runs, but it counts the same 20 seconds.
3. Your old handwashing history is still in Health
Nothing you logged on an older watch is lost, and Apple lists the route: Health on your iPhone, then Browse, Other Data and Handwashing.
9to5Mac confirmed the category is still there in iOS 27. New entries simply stop once you move to one of the new watches.
4. Why it may be gone
Apple has not said why, and 9to5Mac put it plainly: "It's unclear if that's an omission or a hardware difference."
Owners have theories: one wondered about the new health sensor, and another pointed at the new listening features. A third bet the feature is winding down after years of little use, but none of that is confirmed.
5. Ask Apple to bring it back
If you miss it, tell Apple directly. Apple takes product requests on its Apple Watch feedback page, and it takes a minute.
Owners in the thread hope it returns. In their words: "Hopefully it will return." I would not count on a date, so set up the timer meanwhile.

Apple lists the SE 3, the Series 9, 10 and 11, and the Ultra 2 and Ultra 3.
Can I get Handwashing back on my Ultra 4?
No setting brings it back on those watches, so a pinned 20 second custom timer is the nearest thing for now.
