You have decided to put a faster drive in, or a bigger one, and the M.2 stick on the website is the size of a stick of gum with no obvious top or bottom.
It goes in at an angle, it takes one screw, and the whole job is about four minutes. The part that catches people is buying the wrong one.
I read the drive makers' own installation guidance before writing this, and their warnings are all about the two minutes before you open anything.
Find out what your machine actually takes
Three things to know, and getting any of them wrong wastes a delivery. The length is the first. The number on the box encodes it, the first two digits the width in millimeters and the rest the length.
2280 is the common one, 22mm wide and 80mm long, and a slot cut for 2280 will not hold a 22110. Then the interface, which can be wired for NVMe, for SATA, or both. The stick has to match what the slot expects.
Check your own machine before ordering. What is already in there is one command away.
The preparation the makers care about most
Their instructions spend more words here than on the fitting. Back up first. A drive swap is when a machine decides to misbehave, and a backup makes that an inconvenience.
Kingston says the room comes first, in its installation guide. Clearing your workspace of static "is important since it can damage your new M.2 drive."
Then yourself. Kingston's instruction is to "Touch a metal surface that's clear of any paint or coating to discharge any electricity that's present in your body."
Then the laptop. With the battery out, Kingston says to "hold the power button on your laptop/notebook for five seconds to discharge any residual electricity."
Where the slot actually is
Not always where you would guess on a laptop. Kingston's own description: for laptops, the M.2 slot is "usually under the bottom panel or under the keyboard." Under the keyboard means a bigger job.
If yours is there, read the service manual before buying tools. Many laptops have two slots, one occupied and one empty, and I would check yours for that first.
Some have one, and it already has your Windows drive in it. That turns a fitting job into a cloning job.
The fitting itself, which is the easy part
Four minutes, and two numbers to remember. Hold it by the sides. Kingston is specific: "Make sure to avoid touching the gold connector pins."
Thirty degrees, not flat. Kingston's wording: "insert the M.2 SSD at a 30-degree angle. It should connect easily without you having to force the connection."
Then press it down and put the screw in. Kingston warns to "Be careful not to overtighten the screw or you can risk damaging the SSD." If it does not seat easily, stop.
Forcing it is how the pins get damaged, and the makers say so rather than hinting at it.
The screw nobody has
A small and genuinely annoying problem. The screw and its standoff come with the machine, not with the drive, and sizes are not standardized across machines. A screw from one drive may not fit another machine's standoff.
Look in the laptop first. The screw is often already sitting in the empty slot or taped inside the panel. Do not improvise with one from elsewhere.
Wrong thread in a soft standoff is a repair, not a shortcut.
After it is in, the part Windows makes you do
A new drive is invisible until you tell Windows it exists. A brand new drive shows nothing in File Explorer. That is correct, not a fault, and it panics people every time.
It has to be initialized and given a partition first. Disk Management is where that happens. Use GPT rather than MBR on any modern machine and any drive over 2 TB.
Moving Windows itself across is a different job. Cloning or a clean install, and a clean install is the tidier of the two.
What to expect afterwards, honestly
Ours, because the marketing oversells this. Boot time improves a lot if you came from a hard disk, and that is the upgrade people feel.
Coming from an older SATA SSD, you will barely notice. The box numbers are sequential transfer speeds, and almost nothing you do all day is one.
Games load faster, and frame rates do not change. That is the graphics card's job, not the drive's.
More space is the real reason to do it. If space is what you are short of, there may be less to gain than you think.
