You pushed a memory card into the slot, nothing happened, and File Explorer carried on as though the slot were not there.
There are two completely different faults behind that, and telling them apart takes one look at Device Manager. Fix the wrong one and you waste an evening.
I checked what this laptop has for card readers before writing, and the answer is the more interesting of the two cases.
The one look that splits it
Do this first, because everything after it depends on the answer. I would not skip it.
⭐ Open Device Manager and look for a card reader entry. It sits under Memory technology devices, or under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
⚡ A reader listed there means the hardware is fine. Then the card, the format or the drive letter is your problem.
⚠️ No reader listed at all is the other fault. Either it was never there. Or Windows has lost it.
⛔ Those two need opposite fixes. Do not start swapping cards until you know which one you have.
When Windows lists no reader at all
Three causes, and the first one catches more people than anybody admits.
⚡ A lot of modern laptops have no card slot. Thin machines dropped it years ago. Nobody announces that.
⭐ On this machine there are zero card reader devices and zero removable drives, which is exactly what a laptop without a slot looks like.
⚠️ A slot that worked and now shows nothing is a driver or a hidden device. Turn on Show hidden devices, in the Device Manager View menu.
⛔ And what looks like a slot may be a SIM tray or a smart card slot. The port next to it may not be what you think either.
When the reader is there and the card is not
The standards body has the answer here, and it is not intuitive.
⭐ Documented by the SD Association, the body that defines the format, on its card capacity page: "SDHC Host Devices can use both SD memory cards and SDHC memory cards."
⚡ And the ceiling above it: "SDXC Host Devices can use SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards and SDXC memory cards."
⚠️ It runs one way only. "SDUC memory cards must only be used with SDUC Host Devices."
⛔ So an older reader genuinely cannot read a newer card, and nothing is broken when it refuses. The reader predates the card.
What that means in practice
That table does not spell out what it means for you, so this bit is ours.
⚡ An SDHC-only reader takes a 32GB card and ignores a 256GB one. That is the SDHC to SDXC line.
⭐ The card is not faulty and neither is the slot. They were designed years apart.
⚠️ A cheap USB card reader solves it permanently. It moves between machines too.
⛔ Reformatting the card will not help here. And formatting it in Windows is the wrong tool anyway.
The reader is there, the card fits, and still nothing
Four checks, quickest first, and you can do all four in a minute.
⭐ Look in Disk Management rather than File Explorer. A card with no drive letter is invisible in one and obvious in the other.
⚡ A card that shows with no letter needs one assigning. Same fix as an external drive that will not appear.
⚠️ Check the lock switch on the side of a full-size SD card. Slid toward the contacts is locked. A locked card can read, and in a fussy reader it looks dead.
⛔ Then clean the contacts and try the card in something else. A phone or a camera settles whether the card or the PC is at fault.
What this page could not test
Stated rather than hidden, because it changes what you should trust here. I could test only half of it.
⚡ There is no card reader on this machine. So no reader fault could be reproduced.
⭐ What I could read is the absence itself, and that is genuinely useful: zero reader devices, zero removable drives, one physical disk.
⚠️ That is the fingerprint of a machine with no slot. Yours should read the same if you have none.
⛔ Everything about the card side is the SD Association's own wording rather than a test here.
Stop troubleshooting and buy the adapter
Three cases where more troubleshooting wastes your evening.
⭐ The reader is not in Device Manager and the machine has no visible slot. Nothing will conjure one.
⚡ Your card is newer than the reader. The rule runs one way. No driver changes it.
⚠️ Your slot is physically damaged. You can usually feel that, as a card that will not seat.
⛔ A USB reader is the cheapest fix here. It also outlives the laptop.

Why does my laptop not detect my SD card?
Two very different reasons, and your Device Manager tells you which. Either Windows lists no card reader at all, which usually means the machine has no slot or has lost the device, or the reader is listed and the card is newer than it. The SD Association's compatibility rule runs one way, so an older reader cannot read a newer card.
Can an old card reader read a new SD card?
No, not beyond its own generation, whatever your card says on the label. The SD Association states that SDHC hosts can use SD and SDHC cards, and SDXC hosts can use SD, SDHC and SDXC cards. A card newer than the host is simply not supported, and no driver changes that.
My card reader disappeared from Windows. What now?
Open your Device Manager, turn on Show hidden devices in the View menu, and look under Memory technology devices and USB controllers. A greyed out entry means the device is known and not present. Nothing listed at all on a machine with no visible slot usually means there never was one.
Why does my SD card show in Disk Management but not File Explorer?
Because it has no drive letter. That happens to your cards and external drives alike, and assigning a letter in Disk Management brings it back. Look there before assuming the card is corrupt.

If a reader is listed, check the card generation against the age of the machine.
Then look in Disk Management, because a card with no letter looks exactly like a dead one.
