AirPods on a Windows Laptop? Hold the Case Button

You open the case next to your laptop and wait for something to happen. On an iPhone a card slides up. On Windows nothing happens at all, and the AirPods never appear in the list.

They are not broken and Windows is not refusing them. There is a button you have to hold, and Apple documents exactly how long for.

I checked what this laptop reports for Bluetooth before writing. The first thing worth ruling out is whether the radio is there at all.

The button, and how long to hold it

Apple's own steps, and the model matters.

⚡ Documented by Apple on its pairing page, for AirPods 1, 2 or 3 and AirPods Pro 1 or 2: "press and hold the setup button on the back of the AirPods case for about 5 seconds, or until the status light flashes white."

⭐ For AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3 it is not a button at all. Apple says to "double-tap the front of the AirPods case so the status light flashes white."

⚠️ For AirPods Max: "Press and hold the listening mode button for about 5 seconds, or until the status light flashes white."

⛔ The white flash is the whole signal. Until you see it, your AirPods are not advertising themselves. No amount of scanning at the laptop will find them.

The order that works

Four steps, and getting them the wrong way round is why people give up.

⭐ Turn Bluetooth on at the laptop first. Open the Add device panel so it is already scanning.

⚡ Apple's own wording starts there: "With your AirPods in the charging case, open the lid". Taking them out first is the commonest mistake.

⚠️ Then hold the button until the light flashes white, and only then look at the laptop's list.

⛔ Pick them from the list within about thirty seconds. Pairing mode times out and the light stops flashing.

⭐ On a laptop, I open the Add device panel before touching the case. Doing it the other way round is why so many attempts time out.

What this machine reports

Read here, so you have something to compare against.

⭐ A Bluetooth radio is present and reporting OK. That is the check to do before blaming the earbuds.

⚡ Windows lists five audio endpoints on this machine, all in a working state. Every set of headphones you pair adds to that list and stays there.

⚠️ A laptop with no Bluetooth radio at all cannot pair anything. That shows up the same way a missing Wi-Fi adapter does.

⛔ And a radio that is present but switched off in Settings looks identical from the outside. Check the toggle before the hardware.

What you lose, in Apple's own words

Short, honest, and not mentioned by most guides.

⚡ Apple states the limit plainly: "You can't use Siri, but you can listen and talk."

⭐ That one sentence is doing a lot of work. No Siri, no voice control, and no Apple-side setup screen.

⚠️ Ours, and worth knowing before you commit: automatic ear detection does not pause your audio on Windows the way it does on an iPhone.

⛔ Nor does automatic switching between devices. On Windows you connect and disconnect by hand, every time.

Can you see the battery level on Windows?

Answered plainly, because the answer is annoying.

⭐ Windows does not show AirPods battery percentage the way an iPhone does. There is no card and no widget.

⚡ Some Windows builds show a battery level for some Bluetooth devices. AirPods are inconsistent about reporting one at all.

⚠️ Put them in the case near an Apple device you own. That is the reliable way. If you have none, the low battery tone is your only warning.

⛔ Do not buy a third-party battery app to solve this. It is a small annoyance and the apps ask for more access than the problem is worth.

When the sound is bad rather than absent

A different fault entirely, and the one people confuse with a pairing problem.

⭐ If they connect and music sounds fine until you join a call, that is not AirPods. It is Windows switching to a low quality profile so it can use the microphone.

⚡ It affects every Bluetooth headset, not just Apple ones. The cause and the checkbox that stops it are worth reading in full.

⚠️ So do not re-pair to fix bad sound. You get the same result. And you lose an evening.

If they still will not appear

Four things, cheapest first.

⛔ Put them back in the case, close the lid, wait ten seconds, and start again. More pairing attempts fail from timing than from anything else.

⚡ Remove any old entry for them first. A stale pairing in the laptop's Bluetooth list blocks a fresh one.

⚠️ Charge the case. A flat case cannot put the AirPods into pairing mode at all. The light will not flash either.

⭐ Then reset the AirPods themselves. That is Apple's own last step, and it returns them to the state they left the factory in.

Why will my AirPods not show up on my Windows laptop?

Because they are not in pairing mode. On a non-Apple device you put them into it by hand. Keep them in the case with the lid open, and hold the setup button on the back for about five seconds, until the status light flashes white. Nothing appears in the laptop's list until that light flashes.

Which button do I hold on the AirPods case?

The setup button on the back of the case, for about five seconds, on AirPods 1, 2 and 3 and AirPods Pro 1 and 2. On AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 there is no button and Apple says to double-tap the front of the case instead. On AirPods Max it is the listening mode button.

Do AirPods work properly with Windows?

They play audio and the microphone works, but Apple states you cannot use Siri. You also lose ear detection pausing and automatic switching between devices. Windows will not reliably show you a battery percentage either. As plain Bluetooth earbuds they are fine.

Why do my AirPods sound terrible on a work call?

That is Windows, not the AirPods. When something needs the microphone, Windows switches the headset to a low quality profile that every Bluetooth headset shares. Re-pairing does not help. The setting that controls it is a checkbox in the sound devices list.

• AirPods do not pair to Windows automatically. You force pairing mode by hand.

• Bad sound on calls is a Windows profile problem, not a pairing one.

Where to Next

If it is an iPhone rather than a laptop refusing to co-operate, and it will not even answer a call, that has its own causes. Some of them are not the screen at all.

Check that your laptop has Bluetooth and that it is switched on before anything else. It rules out half the reports in one look.

Then open the Add device panel so it is already scanning. Only then hold the button on the case, until the light flashes white.

If an old entry for the AirPods is sitting in the list, remove it first. A stale pairing stops a new one from taking.

If they connect and then sound poor on calls, stop trying to re-pair them. That is a different fault with a different setting.
