Bluetooth Vanished From Windows? What Actually Changed

Yesterday there was a Bluetooth toggle in Settings. Today there is no toggle. No Bluetooth section, and nothing in Device Manager either. Your headphones sit there unpaired and Windows behaves as though the radio was never fitted.

I find this one genuinely unnerving to look at, because hardware is not supposed to leave.

The good news is that it almost never has. In every thread I read, the radio was still physically present. Windows had simply stopped seeing it.

What follows is what changed, in the order worth checking, and the fix two separate owners confirmed is not on Microsoft's page at all.

First, work out which kind of gone this is

There are three levels. They need different answers, and two minutes settles which one you have.

Level one: the toggle is missing from Settings. Open Settings, Bluetooth & devices. If there is no switch at the top, go down a level.

Level two: nothing in Device Manager. Press Windows key + X and choose Device Manager. Look for a Bluetooth heading. No heading at all is level two.

Level three: nothing even when hidden devices are shown. In Device Manager, open View and choose Show hidden devices. Look again.

Write down which level you are at. Everything below is faster if you know, and level one is usually a five second fix that people spend an hour on.

Then check the obvious pair before anything else. Windows key + A opens quick settings, and Airplane mode must be off.

Documented by Microsoft on its Bluetooth disappeared page, and it is exactly this blunt: "Airplane mode disables Bluetooth."

The fix two owners confirmed, and it is not in the documentation

Try this first if you are at level two or three. It takes three minutes and costs you nothing.

Reported working by an owner, on the day his Bluetooth vanished mid-session. He had already run the troubleshooter, checked services and found the drivers missing from Device Manager.

In his words: "Although what did help was doing a full shutdown via shift. I also disconnected the PC's power source. Bluetooth is back and running as normal."

Confirmed by a second owner weeks later, independently, on the same thread: "Woke up to absolutely no bluetooth. Reboots, looked at BIOS changed settings in services. SHIFT+Shutdown. Unplug power, count to 4, plug back in. Power back up…bluetooth has returned."

Both had already tried the driver route first. Both found the power cycle was what did it, and that is why I have put it above the drivers for you.

How to do it exactly: hold Shift while you click Shut down. Wait for the machine to go dark, then pull the power lead, and the battery if yours comes out.

Hold the physical power button down for about thirty seconds with no power connected. Then plug back in and start up.

Why an ordinary shutdown is not the same thing

Because your normal shutdown is not really a shutdown, and this is the whole reason the trick works.

Windows saves part of itself to disk at shutdown and reloads that copy at power on. That is why the machine starts quickly. Devices are not fully re-detected in that path.

Holding Shift while you shut down skips the saved copy and does a real, complete shutdown. So does a restart, which is why restarting sometimes cures things that switching off overnight never does.

The same mechanism explains a keyboard that is dead at power on and fine after a restart, and it is worth reading if your Bluetooth fault has a cousin on the same machine.

Pulling the power on top of that drains the board, which resets the USB host controller most Bluetooth radios hang off internally.

⚠️ Neither owner's fix appears anywhere on Microsoft's Bluetooth-disappeared page. Its list runs troubleshooter, drivers, airplane mode, Windows Update, restart. The word Shift is not on it.

Show hidden devices, which the documentation also leaves out

If the power cycle changed nothing, this is the next thing advisers reach for, and again it is absent from the official page.

Reported by an adviser on a thread from 29 May 2026, answering an owner whose desktop Bluetooth had vanished and whose troubleshooter offered no suggestions at all.

Open Device Manager, choose View, then Show hidden devices. Look for a grayed-out Bluetooth entry that was invisible to you a moment ago.

Right-click that hidden device, choose Uninstall device, and restart the PC. Windows re-detects it from scratch on the way back up.

Ours, and marked as ours: a grayed-out entry is a device Windows remembers but is not currently talking to. That is a very different situation from an empty list, and it usually means the driver stack rather than the radio.

Also look for Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) while you are in there. On many laptops that is the Bluetooth radio failing to introduce itself, and the same message on a USB port has its own page.

The service that has to be running

Quick, and worth ruling out. A stopped service produces exactly the missing-toggle symptom.

Open the Run box with Windows key + R and launch `services.msc`. Find Bluetooth Support Service.

On your machine it should be running, with its startup type set to Automatic or Manual (Trigger Start). If it is stopped, start it. Then restart.

Reported by advisers repeatedly across these threads, including in the answer that 400 people marked helpful on the thread where the power cycle eventually won.

⚠️ This one has a poor confirmation record on its own. Several owners had already set the service correctly before they posted, and it had not helped any of them.

Check it because it costs you thirty seconds. Do not expect it to be your answer.

What Microsoft actually documents, in its own order

Worth running properly if the three above have not done it, because the driver route genuinely does fix a share of these.

Microsoft names the causes plainly: "incorrect Bluetooth settings, outdated or incompatible drivers, stopped system services, hardware malfunctions, or problems by recent Windows updates".

Its first step is the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app, which runs diagnostics and attempts a repair without you deciding anything.

Then the driver. In Device Manager, select the Bluetooth adapter, which Microsoft notes "may include the word radio", right-click it and choose Update driver, then search automatically.

Then Windows Update, because as Microsoft puts it, "Some Bluetooth drivers are delivered via Windows Update." Look inside optional updates as well as the main list.

If the automatic search says your driver is current, that is not proof. Go to your PC maker's own support page and take theirs by hand, matched to your exact model.

Run `msinfo32` and copy the System Model line first. Advisers on these threads ask for it every single time, and it is the difference between the right driver and a guess.

When it is the firmware, and when it is the radio

Some machines can switch the radio off below Windows entirely. A firmware update or a battery change can flip it.

Restart into your firmware settings, usually F2 or Del during boot, and look under a Security or Onboard Devices heading for a Bluetooth or wireless entry.

If it is enabled there and Windows still sees nothing after everything above, you are into hardware, and on a desktop that is a cheap ending.

A USB Bluetooth adapter costs very little. It plugs into any free port and brings its own radio and driver. On a laptop the same adapter works, and it saves opening the machine.

Ours, and marked as ours: buy the adapter before you pay anybody for a diagnosis. If the dongle works, you have proved the fault and fixed it in the same afternoon.

What did not work for people

The record here is thinner than I would like. Pretending otherwise would not help you.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. An owner on 3 February 2026 had done exactly that before posting. Her Bluetooth still would not appear or connect, and her thread closed without a resolution.

The troubleshooter. The owner from 29 May 2026 ran it and it "did not come up with any suggestions", which is a common outcome when the device is missing rather than misbehaving.

Changing settings in BIOS and services. The second owner who confirmed the power cycle had already tried both. He named them as things he did before the one that worked, which is worth knowing if you were about to repeat them.

Status: last verified 22 August 2026. The vendor route is airplane mode, then the troubleshooter, then drivers, then Windows Update. The full power cycle two owners confirmed, Show hidden devices and the Bluetooth Support Service appear nowhere on that page, and are marked here as owner or adviser evidence rather than documentation.

Why did my Bluetooth disappear from Windows 11 overnight?

Almost always because Windows lost the device rather than your hardware failing. Two owners confirmed that a full shutdown with Shift held, followed by unplugging the power for a few seconds, brought it back after driver reinstalls and service changes had not.

How do I get the Bluetooth toggle back in Settings?

Check airplane mode first, then Device Manager with View, Show hidden devices turned on. A grayed-out Bluetooth entry can be uninstalled and re-detected on restart. If nothing appears at any level, the power cycle above is the cheapest next thing for you to try.

Does Shift plus Shut down really do anything different?
