One cable to the laptop, and the desk comes alive. Two screens, the wired network, the keyboard, the mouse, and the laptop charging while it all happens.
That is the promise, and the good news is that docks do deliver it. What nobody tells you is that the number of screens you get is not a fact about the dock.
I went to a vendor page that lists the same dock twice, with two different display limits, and the reason it does that is the most useful thing on this page.
What the box actually is
Four jobs in one connector, and it helps to name them. The dock feeds the laptop from its own supply. Your laptop charger stays in the bag, and monitors run from the same cable that is charging you.
Then the data. Keyboard, mouse, drives, headset, printer, all on the dock's own ports, and a wired network socket, which most thin laptops no longer have room for.
The USB side of this has its own rules worth knowing.
The sentence that explains your monitor limit
Same dock, same cable, two different answers, and Microsoft prints both on its dock overview page.
Microsoft states it for a Thunderbolt host: a Thunderbolt 4 connection "supports up to two 4K external displays at 60Hz (when supported by device and display)." Read those twice.
For a plain USB-C host, the same dock: a USB-C connection "supports one external display up to 4K at 60Hz." The hardware did not change, only the laptop did.
A dock cannot give you a screen your port will not carry. No price fixes that.
Check the port, not the product page
This is the buying mistake, and it costs people a dock. A USB-C shaped port is not a promise of video. The shape tells you nothing, and what travels through it is the question.
Thunderbolt or USB4 on the laptop is the label to look for, on the port itself or in the laptop's specification.
Microsoft adds a condition even then: 4K at 60 Hz over USB-C "requires High Bit Rate 3 (HBR3) support on both display and host computer." Both ends, not one. An old monitor caps a new laptop just as easily.
Chaining monitors, and what it costs you
There is a way past the limit, with conditions and a penalty. Microsoft's documented ceiling is high: you "can daisy chain up to eight monitors" by running a cable from monitor to monitor.
The requirements are specific. You need monitors that support "at least DisplayPort 1.2 and Multi-Stream Transport (MST)," middle monitors with both DisplayPort in and out, and a GPU that supports the same.
And the cost is stated plainly: "Resolution and refresh rate are reduced when daisy chaining two or more monitors." You also have to switch it on at the monitor.
Microsoft's step is to enable DisplayPort 1.2 in the monitor's own on-screen menu.
The power numbers that catch people out
A dock's wattage is really two numbers, and only one of them is for the laptop. Microsoft documents a 165 W supply on its own dock, giving "up to 96 W passthrough to connected PC."
Its USB-C ports carry 15 W each. The USB-A ports carry 7.5 W. Those are for accessories, and Microsoft is explicit about the limit: the USB-C port "doesn't charge your Surface device or any device that requires more than 15 W."
A gaming laptop can want more than any dock passes through. It will charge slowly, or only while asleep, and neither is a fault.
What a dock will not fix
Ours, and it is the half of the subject the product pages skip. It will not add graphics power. The laptop still draws every pixel itself.
It will not make a screen appear that Windows cannot see. Monitors not detected through a dock is its own problem with its own order.
Nor will it settle which screen is which. Arranging them is a separate job in Settings.
It will not rescue a bad cable either. I would keep the one in the box, because it is short for a reason.
Docks have known faults too, and vendors publish them
Worth reading before you blame yourself. Microsoft lists a current one on its own dock page: it "doesn't fully enumerate with Surface Laptop 3 with AMD processor," and the result is that audio fails.
The remedy column is honest about it: "Microsoft is actively looking to find a resolution to this issue." One processor variant of one model. The vendor made both ends, and I find that is the shape these faults usually take.
So check the maker's known issues page before you spend an evening on your own setup.

What does a docking station actually do?

How many monitors can a docking station run?
That depends on your laptop, not the dock. Microsoft lists the same dock as supporting two 4K displays at 60 Hz from a Thunderbolt 4 host and one from a plain USB-C host. Check what your port is before you buy for two screens.
Is Thunderbolt the same as USB-C?
No. USB-C is the shape of the connector. Thunderbolt and USB4 are what can travel through it. A USB-C port that carries neither will not drive monitors through a dock, whatever the dock costs.
Why does my laptop charge slowly on a dock?
Because the dock passes through less power than your laptop wants. Microsoft's own dock passes up to 96 W to the PC, and its accessory ports carry 15 W and 7.5 W.
A hungry laptop on a modest dock charges slowly, and that is the design rather than a fault.
