You plug the laptop into the dock, the keyboard and the network come alive, and the screens stay black. That combination is the clue.
If everything except video works, the dock is fine and the video path is not. Those are two different journeys inside the same cable.
I looked at how this machine is wired for displays before writing, and it has two separate graphics chips.
What still working tells you
Thirty seconds of diagnosis, free.
⭐ Keyboard, mouse and network working means the dock has power and data. So the dock is not dead and the cable is not dead.
⛔ Video travels a different way through the same connector. On USB-C it is a separate mode the port has to agree to, and it can fail on its own.
⚡ Which is why "everything but the screens" is the commonest version of this. It is also why replacing the dock rarely helps.
Microsoft's route, and what it leaves out
The documented half first.
Documented by Microsoft on its multiple monitors page: "If you connected another display and it isn't showing in Settings, select Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect."
⭐ Press Windows key and P as well. Microsoft lists four choices there: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second screen only.
⚠️ Second screen only with nothing attached leaves you looking at a black laptop screen. Two seconds to undo once you know. A frightening ten minutes if you do not.
⛔ Docking stations, USB-C, adapters and graphics drivers: we could not find any of them on that page. For a fault that is mostly about all four, that is a large gap.
Ours: two graphics chips, and the dock only talks to one
One reading, and it names the cause most guides miss.
Ours, and the display side of this machine reads like this. It reports two display adapters, one built into the processor and one discrete, plus 12 USB hubs enumerated.
⚡ One line names both of yours, and it writes nothing:
Get-CimInstance Win32_VideoController | Select-Object Name, DriverVersion
⭐ A dock's video output is wired to one of them, not both. If the wrong chip is driving the port, or its driver is broken, the screens stay dark. Everything else works perfectly.
⚠️ This is why the fault follows your laptop rather than the dock. The same dock will run three monitors on a colleague's machine.
The order that finds it
Six checks, quickest first.
⭐ Windows key and P, choose Extend. Do this before anything else.
⭐ Then Settings, System, Display, Multiple displays, Detect, which is Microsoft's own step.
⚡ Unplug the dock, wait ten seconds, plug it back in with your laptop awake. Docks negotiate video at the moment of connection, and a sleeping laptop misses it.
⚠️ Try one monitor on its own. Two screens through one dock can exceed what the port supports, and the second one silently fails.
⛔ Try a monitor plugged straight into the laptop. If that works, the laptop's video is fine and the dock path is the problem.
⭐ Then update the graphics driver. Both of them. More docks come back from this than from anything else on the list.
The cable, and the thing nobody checks
Two minutes, and it catches a real share of these.
⛔ Not every USB-C cable carries video. A charging cable that looks identical will power the dock and pass no picture at all.
⚡ Use the cable that came with your dock. If it is lost, the replacement has to state video or DisplayPort Alt Mode explicitly.
⚠️ And not every USB-C port on a laptop carries video either. Manufacturers often wire only one, usually marked with a small display or lightning symbol.
⭐ Ours, and marked as ours: try the other port before working through any of this. It is free and it is the answer surprisingly often.
Docks with their own driver
The category that behaves differently.
⭐ Some docks drive displays in software rather than through the graphics chip. Those need the manufacturer's driver installed, and they show nothing at all without it.
⚡ You can tell which kind you have. If your dock shows the boot menu or the firmware screen, it is a hardware dock. One that only comes alive inside Windows is a software one.
⚠️ A Windows update can remove or break that driver, and everything else on the dock keeps working. That matches the symptom exactly.
When it is not the dock at all

⭐ A monitor not detected without any dock involved is a shorter list. Eight fixes, quickest first.
⚡ A screen that is detected but arranged wrongly is a setup question rather than a fault. Four settings, done once.
⚠️ And if the dock's USB side is also flaky, which port you are using matters more than people expect.

Why does my dock work for USB but not for monitors?
Because video travels a different path through the same connector. Power and data can negotiate successfully while the display mode fails. That is why everything except the screens comes alive. The dock is usually not the faulty part.
Why does the same dock work on someone else's laptop?
