Android Phone Will Not Turn On? One Question First

It worked last night and this morning it is a black rectangle in your hand. No logo, no buzz, no light, however long you hold the button.

Before you do anything else, answer one question, because it splits this into two completely different problems.

I would not start pressing buttons. I would put it on a charger and leave it, and the reason is worth two minutes of your time.

The question that decides everything

Ask it now, because the rest of the page depends on the answer.

⭐ Is the phone completely dead, or is it running and showing you nothing?

⚡ Dead and dark means no light, no vibration, no sound, no warmth. That is a power problem and the charger is your first move.

⛔ Alive but dark means it vibrates, or it makes a sound when a message arrives, or it feels warm. That is a screen or a software problem, and charging it will not help.

If it is dead and dark

Patience first, and it works more often than anything clever.

⭐ Use a wall charger, untouched, for that whole half hour. Not a laptop port, not a car socket.

⚡ A deeply flat battery shows nothing for a long time, not even a charging symbol, and pressing buttons during that window achieves nothing.

⚠️ Then hold power and volume down together, with it still plugged in. Google's wording is "at least 20 seconds", and that is the forced restart on most Android phones.

⛔ If half an hour gives you nothing, change the cable and the adapter and give it another half hour before you conclude anything.

⭐ And check the port while you are there. Lint in the charging port is the commonest reason a phone stops taking power at all.

If it is alive but showing nothing

A different fault entirely, and usually less serious than it looks.

⚡ Google says to do exactly this: "Make your phone ring. You can call it from another phone." If it rings, the phone is working and the screen is not.

⭐ Then try the forced restart anyway. Google gives a longer hold for this case, "about 35 seconds", followed by a two minute wait before you judge it.

⚠️ Shine a torch at the screen at an angle in a dark room. A very faint image means the backlight has failed rather than the whole display.

⛔ A phone that responds to touch with no picture is a display repair, and no setting or reset will bring it back.

The signs that are worth reading

Three things a phone tells you if you let it.

⭐ A brief buzz when you press power means the battery has enough charge to try. That rules out a flat battery.

⚡ A logo that appears and then disappears, over and over, is a boot loop rather than a dead phone. That is software and it is usually recoverable.

⚠️ A charging light or symbol that appears after a few minutes is the best sign you can get. Leave it alone. Let it fill.

⛔ And nothing at all, on two different chargers, after an hour, is the one that needs a shop.

What not to do

Four moves that make it worse.

⛔ Do not keep pressing the power button. If the phone is flat, every press wastes what it has gathered.

⚠️ Do not put it in rice. That is for water, it does not work for water either, and it has nothing to do with a phone that will not start.

⭐ Do not take the back off. Modern phones are glued. Batteries are soft pouches, and a bent one is dangerous.

⚡ And do not factory reset it as a first move. You cannot reach the menu on a dead phone anyway, and on an alive one you would lose everything for no reason.

How long should I charge an Android phone that will not turn on?

Thirty minutes on a wall charger, untouched, before you judge anything. A deeply flat battery shows nothing at all on screen for a long time. If nothing has happened after that, change the cable and adapter and give it another thirty minutes before you decide it is broken.

How do I force restart an Android phone?

On most of them, hold power and volume down together for about twenty seconds. Keep it plugged in while you do it. This does not delete anything and it is safe to try more than once, but it will not help a phone that is genuinely flat.

Is my phone dead or is the screen broken?

Ring it from another phone. If it rings, buzzes or makes any sound, the phone is running and the screen is the problem. If it is silent and cold after being on a charger, it is a power problem instead. That one test separates two completely different repairs.
