Android Phone Not Charging? Start With the Port

You plug it in and nothing happens. No bolt, no vibration, no change on the screen, and the same cable charged it perfectly yesterday.

Before you order a new cable or worry about the battery, there is one thing to check that costs nothing and fixes a surprising share of these.

I would look inside the charging port with a torch first. Not at the cable, not at the plug. The port, because of what lives in there.

The lint, and why it stops everything

Start here, and check it before you spend anything.

⚡ Documented by Google on its Android charging page: "Check that there's nothing in the port of your phone, like dust or lint."

⭐ Your charging port is an open slot that lives in a pocket. Lint packs into the far end of it, a little more every day.

⛔ It does not have to be full to stop working. It only has to stop the plug seating. A millimetre short makes no contact at all.

⚡ The tell is that the plug feels loose or shallow. Compare it with how it felt when the phone was new.

⚠️ Clear it with something wooden and dry. A toothpick, with the phone switched off. Scrape gently towards the opening.

⛔ Never use a pin, a paperclip or compressed air. Metal shorts the contacts and air drives the lint further in.

Then prove it is the phone and not the kit

Three swaps, and you only need one of them to answer it.

⚡ Google says to test the kit itself: "Try to charge another device with your power adapter and cable."

⛔ Change the cable first. Cables fail more often than anything else here. The break is usually inside the plug where you cannot see it.

⭐ Then change the adapter, then the socket. Do them one at a time or you learn nothing.

⚠️ Try charging from a computer if you have one. Slow is fine. Any charging at all tells you the port and battery are alive.

⛔ And try your cable on another phone. That is the fastest way to condemn a cable without buying one.

When the screen is completely dead

The case that frightens you most, and it is usually the least serious.

⭐ Documented by Google, and it puts a number on the wait: "Charge your phone for at least 30 minutes before restarting."

⚡ A deeply flat battery shows nothing at all for that whole half hour, not even a charging symbol.

⚡ A wall socket, not a laptop. Your flat phone needs more current than most computer ports will give it.

⚠️ Then force a restart while it is still plugged in. Google's instruction is to "press and hold both the volume-down button and the power button at the same time for at least 20 seconds".

⛔ Ours, and it is worth timing: nothing visible for thirty minutes is normal on a truly empty battery. Nothing after two hours on a known-good charger is not.

The heat pause nobody expects

A real behaviour that gets mistaken for a fault.

⚡ Your phone stops charging when it is too warm. In a car, in sunlight, or straight after a long game, charging pauses on purpose.

⭐ It restarts on its own once the phone cools. Take the case off and leave it somewhere cool for twenty minutes.

⚠️ A phone that is hot while charging and never gains percentage is worth taking seriously, and that is the one case here where I would stop and get it looked at.

Wireless charging is its own answer

Worth separating, because the causes barely overlap.

⭐ Alignment is everything. A few millimetres off the coil and your phone gets nothing at all.

⚡ Thick cases and anything metal block it, including a card holder or a magnetic mount plate.

⚠️ And a pad that works for one phone and not another is usually power, not the pad. Cheap adapters cannot drive them.

⛔ If wired works and wireless does not, the port and battery are fine. That is useful information, not a second fault.

When it really is the battery

Three signs, and only the third is urgent.

⚡ It charges, but only to a low number and then stops. That is age, and it happens gradually.

⭐ It falls from 40 percent to nothing in a minute. A worn cell losing its ability to hold voltage under load.

⛔ Any swelling at all, or a back that no longer sits flat, means stop. Do not charge it, do not press it, and take it somewhere.

⚠️ And a phone that is simply slow to charge is a different question. The rate itself is worth reading before you blame anything.

Why is my Android phone not charging with a working cable?

Most often because the port has packed with pocket lint and the plug can no longer seat fully. The cable is fine and the phone is fine, but they are not making contact. Look into the port with a torch and clear it gently with a wooden toothpick, with the phone switched off.

How long should I charge a dead Android phone before worrying?

Give it a full thirty minutes on a wall charger without touching it. A deeply flat battery shows nothing on screen for a long time. If there is still no sign after two hours on a charger you know works, that is when it stops being normal.

Why does my phone stop charging when it is hot?

Because it is protecting the battery, and it is meant to. Charging pauses when the phone is too warm and starts again once it cools. Take the case off, move it out of the sun, and leave it twenty minutes. A phone that stays hot and never gains any percentage is worth getting looked at.

Is it safe to clean the charging port myself?

Yes, if you use something dry and non-metal with the phone switched off. A wooden toothpick works. Never use a pin or a paperclip, because metal can short the contacts, and skip compressed air, which pushes the lint deeper instead of pulling it out.

Where to Next

If the phone is fine and it is a payment card that has stopped working, that is a wallet problem. Removing a pass that refuses to go is its own job.

Get a torch and look into the charging port before you do anything else. Thirty seconds, no cost, and it is the single commonest cause.

If the port is clear, swap the cable and nothing else. One change at a time is the only way you learn what fixed it.

If the phone shows nothing at all, put it on a wall charger and leave it alone for half an hour before you decide anything.

If it charges but runs hot while doing it, stop and let it cool first. Google's own first instruction for a hot phone is to put it down.

And if it charges fine but empties by lunchtime, the phone will name the culprit itself. The usage screen is two taps away.

If it charges but takes forever, that is a different question and the rate itself is readable. Slow charging has its own causes.
