One file has a spinning arrow next to it and everything else is fine. Or the whole folder has stopped, and OneDrive is showing a small red cross it will not explain.
Before you sign out, reset anything or reinstall it, look at what the file is called. Microsoft publishes a list of characters that simply cannot sync. One of them turns up more often than you would guess.
I checked the OneDrive state on this machine first. One stuck file and a stopped account are different problems, and that is the first thing to establish.
One file or all of them
Two very different problems that look alike in the taskbar.
⭐ One file spinning while the rest are ticked? OneDrive is running fine, and that file is being rejected.
⚡ Everything stopped at once? That points at the account, the storage or the connection.
⚠️ Read on this machine: OneDrive is running and the folder is in place. That is the normal state, and the one to compare yours against.
⛔ Open the OneDrive icon in the taskbar and read the message. It usually names the file. People close it without looking.
The characters that can never sync
This is the commonest single cause and it is completely invisible.
⚡ Microsoft prints the list itself, on its restrictions page. These characters are not allowed in a file or folder name:
" * : < > ? / \ |⭐ A colon is the usual culprit. People type a time, or a title with a colon in it. The file never syncs again from that moment.
⚠️ Microsoft also states: "Leading and trailing spaces in file or folder names also aren't allowed."
⛔ A trailing space is impossible to see. Rename the file, retype the name cleanly, and watch it sync within seconds.
⭐ When a single file sticks, I retype the whole name rather than editing it. It takes five seconds and it removes whatever you cannot see in there.
And the names that are blocked outright
Shorter list, and it catches the technically-minded.
⭐ Microsoft names them: ".lock, CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM0 – COM9, LPT0 – LPT9, _vti_, desktop.ini, any filename starting with ~$".
⚡ The last one matters most for you. Files beginning with a tilde and a dollar sign are Office's own temporary files. Word and Excel leave them behind when they close badly.
⚠️ So a folder that will not finish syncing often has an abandoned Office temp file in it. Delete those and it moves on.
⛔ CON, PRN and AUX are ancient device names that Windows still reserves. If you named a folder AUX, that is why.
The two limits worth knowing
Numbers, so you can rule them out quickly.
⚡ Microsoft states the ceiling for a single upload: "250GB". Almost nobody hits that.
⭐ The one people do hit is the account itself. Microsoft says: "If you exceed your Microsoft storage, you won't be able to upload, edit, or sync new files (such as Camera Roll) to your OneDrive."
⚠️ Note the wording. Not just new files. Editing existing ones stops too. A full account feels exactly like a broken one.
⛔ Check your storage before you check anything else if everything has stopped at once. It is one line on the OneDrive settings screen.
Paths that are too long
Real, common on shared folders, and it has no obvious symptom.
⭐ Microsoft lists it as its own problem to fix. The full path is every folder name plus the file name, added together.
⚡ A file three folders deep can exceed the limit. Even when its own name is short.
⚠️ Microsoft says different apps and Office versions have different limits. So it does not print one number.
⛔ The fix is to shorten a folder name, not the file. Renaming one folder near the top pulls every file inside it back under.
When to reset rather than reinstall
Ours, and in this order.
⚡ Close OneDrive from the taskbar icon and open it again. A surprising share of stuck syncs clear here.
⭐ Then sign out and sign back in, which Microsoft describes as unlinking and relinking the account.
⚠️ A reset re-reads every file rather than deleting anything. Your files stay where they are, and it can take a while on a big folder.
⛔ Reinstalling is almost never the answer. It does the same work as a reset with extra steps, and people reach for it first.
What syncing is not
Three misunderstandings that cause most of the panic.
⭐ OneDrive is not a backup. Delete a file on the PC and it deletes in the cloud. That is the design.
⚡ Files On-Demand means a file can exist without being downloaded. A cloud icon is not a failure, it is a file you have not opened yet.
⚠️ And moving your Desktop and Documents into OneDrive is a separate feature. If your folders moved without you asking, that is what happened.
⛔ On this machine that folder redirection is not switched on, which is worth knowing when you compare your own setup.
When it really is broken
Three honest endings.
⛔ The same file fails after a clean rename and a reset. Copy your content into a brand new file and delete the old one.
⚠️ Sync stops only on one network. That is a firewall or a captive portal, not OneDrive. Work out whether the service or the connection is the problem.
⭐ Or nothing has synced for days and the icon shows no error at all. That is the case for signing out and back in.

Why will one file not sync to OneDrive?
Almost always its name. In your case too, most likely. Microsoft blocks the characters " * : < > ? / \ and the pipe, and it does not allow leading or trailing spaces. A colon typed into a title is the usual culprit, and a trailing space is invisible. Rename the file cleanly and it usually syncs within seconds.
What file names does OneDrive not allow?
Besides the blocked characters, Microsoft names .lock, CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM0 to COM9, LPT0 to LPT9, _vti_, desktop.ini, and any file name of yours starting with a tilde and a dollar sign. That last one is Office's own temporary file, and abandoned ones stop a whole folder finishing.
Why has OneDrive stopped syncing everything?
Check your storage first. Microsoft says that if you exceed your Microsoft storage you cannot upload, edit or sync new files, so editing existing ones stops as well. If storage is fine, close OneDrive from the taskbar and open it again, then sign out and back in.
Should I reinstall OneDrive to fix syncing?
Almost never. Signing out and back in does the same work with fewer steps, and a reset re-reads your files rather than deleting them. Reinstalling is what people try first and it rarely adds anything the simpler steps have not already done.

Click the OneDrive icon in the taskbar and read what it says. It usually names the file, and most people close that message without looking.
If it is one file, look hard at the name for a colon, a slash or a space at the end. Rename it cleanly and watch it go.
If everything has stopped, check your storage before anything else. A full account stops edits as well as uploads.
Only then close OneDrive and reopen it, and after that sign out and back in. Leave reinstalling alone.
